Quilted Table Topper with Hawaiian Motifs

This small and very handsome quilt features the designs from the Hawaiian Motif Applique Set II for a large hoop.

The finished size of the table topper is about 24" x 30".

For the project you will need:
  • about 1/4 yard of white fabric for the applique,
  • about 1/2 yard of pale orange fabric for the blocks,
  • about 1/4 yard of batik fabric in brownish hues for the first border,
  • 1/2 yard of brown fabric for the second border and binding,
  • fabric for backing and low-loft batting.
For embroidery, use tear-away light-weight stabilizer, rayon or polyester embroidery threads, size 12/80 embroidery needle.
Embroidery
With a pencil, draw 7" x 7" squares on the pale orange fabric. Do not cut the blocks now. First make the embroidery in the center of each square. Read about how to embroider the Hawaii motifs on the instructions page.
Cutting:
Cut the blocks out and trim them to 6 1/2" x 6 1/2" squares.
Out of batik fabric, cut 4 strips measuring 3 1/2" x 18 1/2".

Out of brown fabric, cut 4 strips measuring 3 1/2" x 24 1/2" and 3 strips measuring 2 1/2" the length of the width of the fabric for the binding.

Assemble the Top:
Sew the embroidered blocks in 3 pairs.
Sew the rows together.
Sew the first border strips (3 1/2" x 18 1/2" strips) to the right and the left edges.
Sew the first border strips (3 1/2" x 18 1/2") to the upper and the lower edges.
Sew the second border strips (3 1/2" x 24 1/2") to the right and the left edges.
Sew the second border strips (3 1/2" x 24 1/2") to the upper and the lower edges.
Quilting and Finishing:
Now place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.

Pin all three layers together with 1" pins and start quilting. We quilted along the lines of the embroidery and then in free motion style all over the piece.

After the quilting is finished, press the work with heavy steam and square the work -- all corners should be 90 degrees and opposite sides should be of the same length.

Finish the raw edges with the binding.

The table topper is ready. Enjoy!
Happy Stitching!
