This simple wall hanging features the redwork designs from the Christmas Bell Sets. It makes a great accent or an excellent gift.
The finished size of the wall hanging is about 30" x 34".
You will need 4 fabrics: white for the blocks (about 1/4 yard), bright yellow for the sashing (about 1/4 yard), red for blocks and sashing (about 1/8 yard) and green for the blocks, borders and binding (about 1/2 yard). You will also need backing and batting, each piece measuring about 32" x 36".
Please read the cutting instructions first, it's quite possible that you can use red scraps left over from other projects instead of having to purchase fabric.
Out of white fabric, cut 4 squares measuring 6 1/2" x 6 1/2";
1 square measuring 4 1/2" x 4 1/2"
2 strips 2 1/2" wide and the length of the width of the fabric, subcut the strips into 16 squares measuring 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" and 2 strips 2 1/2" x 4 1/2".
Out of yellow fabric cut 4 strips measuring 2 1/2" x 6 1/2", and
4 strips measuring 4 1/2" x 6 1/2".
Out of red fabric, cut 1 strip 2 1/2" wide and the length of the width of the fabric, subcut it into 8 squares measuring 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" and 8 strips measuring 2 1/2" x 4 1/2".
Out of green fabric, cut 3 strips 2 1/2" wide and the length of the width of the fabric, subcut them into 16 strips measuring 2 1/2" x 6 1/2";
2 strips measuring 3 1/2" x 24 1/2",
2 strips measuring 3 1/2" x 34 1/2".
Also cut 4 strips 2 1/2" wide and the length of the width of the fabric for the binding.
Stitch four red 2 1/2" squares, 2 yellow 2 1/2" x 6 1/2 strips and 1 white 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" strip in a row. Make another similar row.
Stitch four white 2 1/2" squares, 2 green 2 1/2" x 6 1/2" strips and 1 red 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" strip in a row. Make 3 more rows like this.
Stitch four green 2 1/2" x 6 1/2" strips, 2 white 6 1/2" x 6 1/2" squares and 1 yellow 4 1/2" x 6 1/2" strip in a row. Make another similar row.
Stitch four red 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" strips, 2 yellow 4 1/2" x 6 1/2" strips and 1 white 4 1/2" x 4 1/2" square in a row.
Stitch all the rows together in the following order:
Attach the upper and lower borders.
Attach the left and right borders.
Stabilize the white squares with iron-on cut-away stabilizer. Make the embroidery. Cut away the excess stabilizer.
You can also use polyester craft felt instead of the stabilizer. In this case we recommend to baste the quilt top to the felt in the ditch along the colored borders. After the embroidery is finished, rip the baste and cut away the excess felt around the embroidery.
Now place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.
Pin all three layers together with 1" pins and start quilting. We quilted along the lines of the embroidery and made stippling in the white blocks. Free-hand quilting is made all over the quilt.
After the quilting is finished, press the work with heavy steam and square the work -- all corners should be 90 degrees and opposite sides should be of the same length.
Finish the raw edges with the binding.
