In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to make a quilted table runner with flower and vine embroidery designs. We’ll go step by step through piecing the top, adding machine embroidery, quilting, and finishing the edges. The design combines bold greens with light panels that frame the embroidery. This project works well as a table accent for any season.
We used the designs from the Flowers and Vines Set. The finished size of the tablerunner is about 15" x 39 1/2".

Assembly:
Note: seam allowance is 1/4" if otherwise recommended, press the seam immediately after you make it. |
Sew the 2 1/2" x 6 1/2" light and dark green strips in pairs along the long sides. You'll get 3 pairs.
Sew these units to the 6 1/2" x 8 1/2" rectangles with the lighter green closer to the rectangle. You'll get 3 rows. |
Sew the 3 1/2" x 6 1/2" light and dark green strips in pairs along the long sides. You'll get 3 pairs. |
Sew these units to the 6 1/2" x 6 1/2" squares with the lighter green to the square. You'll get 3 rows. |
Sew the rows together alternating the "square" rows, with "rectangle" rows. |
Sew the 2 1/2" x 36 1/2" borders to the long edges of the working piece. |
Sew the 2 1/2" x 16 1/2" borders to the short edges of the working piece. |
Embroidery |
Upload the files of the Flowers and Vines Set to the embroidery machine.
Select threads.
Mark the position of the embroidery on the light-colored parts. If you have a printer and embroidery software, print-outs of the designs can be helpful. (You can also use test stitch-outs for the purpose.) If you do not have a printer, you can cut out rectangles of the same size as the designs and arrange them on the fabric to determine the position of the embroidery.
Working with one design at a time, stabilize the area. Hoop the fabric tightly and embroider the design. Remove the excess stabilizer. |
Quilting and Finishing
Now place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.
Pin all layers together.
We quilted in a free-motion style all over the working piece. Start any embroidered part, and echo-quilt the emboidery first, then the area around. Quilt all embroidered parts. |
Change threads and quilt the light-colored green parts.
Quilt the darker green parts the last. |
Press with heavy steam. Square the piece - all angles should be 90 degrees and opposite sides of the same length.
Finish the raw edges with the binding. |
Have fun! |
