Create a beautiful Easter wall quilt with a stained glass window design and floral embroidery. This tutorial will guide you through sewing, quilting, and adding machine embroidery to bring the design to life. The center panel features a colorful stained glass-style window with a cross, surrounded by a floral arrangement. Step-by-step instructions will help you complete this project, making it a meaningful decoration for the season. We used the design of the Stained Glass Window and flower designs from the Spring Flower Set.
The finished size of the quilt is about 20" x 26".
You will need :
- embroidery threads either polyester or rayon (for the window, please follow our color card; for the flowers, use the colors of the window);
- about 1/2 yard of light-colored solid fabric for the central part;
- strips of fabrics in the colors of the embroidery threads for the borders and binding;
- light-weight cut-away embroidery stabilizer;
- batting and backing;
- quilter's ruler;
- rotary cutter;
- iron;
- #12 universal needle;
- quilting threads of matching colors;
- #12-#14 quilting needle.
Cutting:
Out of the light-colored fabric, cut a piece measuring 12 1/2" x 16 1/2". |
Select strips of fabrics in jewel tones. You will need:
- 8 strips 17"-18" long x 1 1/2" wide and
- 10 strips 27"-28" long x 1 1/2" wide.
Assembly:
Note: seam allowance is 1/4" if otherwise recommended, press the seam immediately after you make it. |
First we assemble the upper and lower borders of the quilt. We use the 17"-18" long strips. Decide beforehand on the color order of the strips. Sew the 2 strips to the upper and lower edges of the central part.
Place the next strip slightly overlapping the first strip diagonally. Pin. |
Sew the strip in place. Cut the excess fabric of the previous strip.
Continue until you sew 4 strips to the upper and then to the lower edges of the central part. Press and trim the ends of the strips so that the width of the working piece is 16 1/2". |
In the same way assemble the side borders, but using the longer fabric strips. |
Embroidery |
Upload the files of the Stained Glass Window and the Spring Flowers designs to the embroidery machine. Select threads. Stabilize the central part. If you have a printer and embroidery software, print-outs of the designs can be helpful. If you do not, you can cut out rectangles of the same size as the designs and arrange them on the fabric to determine the position of the embroidery. Hoop the fabric tightly and embroider the design of the window in the center, then the flowers around it. Remove the excess stabilizer.
Quilting and Finishing
Now place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.
Pin all layers together. We quilted in a free-motion style all over the working piece. Start from the central part, and echo-quilt the emboidery first. We quilted "bricks" around the window and flower patterns around the flower embroidery.
Proceed to the borders, change threads as the colors require. |
Press with heavy steam. Square the piece - all angles should be 90 degrees and opposite sides of the same length. Finish the raw edges with the binding. |
Have fun! |
