Get ready for the holidays with these festive winter-themed placemats featuring snowflake embroidery. In this tutorial, you'll learn how to sew, quilt, and embellish these placemats with your embroidery machine. These placemats bring a cozy, seasonal touch to your table, perfect for Christmas gatherings and winter meals.
A very easy and quick project for beginners. We used the designs from the Magical Snowflake Set (all designs fit into a large hoop, 5" x 7"). The finished size of each placemat is about 12 1/2" x 16 1/2". |
|
You will need :
- embroidery threads either polyester or rayon, (we changed the colors to match the colors of the fabrics we used);
- about 1 yard of blue fabric for the central part and binding;
- small amount of cotton fabrics in 5 blue hues for the borders (4 fabrics are solid and 1 is patterned;
- light-weight cut-away embroidery stabilizer;
- batting;
- quilter's ruler;
- rotary cutter;
- iron;
- #12 universal needle;
- quilting threads (to match the colors of the fabrics);
- #12-#14 quilting needle.
|
Cutting (for one placemat):
|
Out of dark blue fabric, cut 1 piece measuring 9 1/2" x 11 1/2" for the central part. Use the remaining fabric for the binding. |
Out of the 4 fabrics of different blue hues, cut 4 strips each measuring 2" x 9 1/2 for the side borders. |
Out of the patterned blue fabric, cut 2 strips measuring 2 1/2" x 16 1/2" for the upper and lower borders. |
Assembly:
|
Note: seam allowance is 1/4" if otherwise recommended, press every seam immediately after you make it. |
Sew the four 2" x 9 1/2" strips in 2 pairs along the long edges.
|
|
Sew the pairs to the left and right edges of the central part. |
|
Sew the patterned strips to the upper and lower edges of the working piece.
|
|
Embroidery |
Upload the files of the Magical Snowflake Set to the embroidery machine. Select threads. Stabilize the central part.
Hoop the fabric tightly and embroider the designs on the central part, 2 designs per a placemat. Remove the excess stabilizer.
|
Quilting and Finishing
|
Now place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.
Pin all layers together.
We quilted in a free-motion style all over the working piece. Start from the central part, and echo-quilt the emboidery first with a matching thread.
Then proceed to quilt the all over the piece in patterns you like. |
|
Press with heavy steam. Square the piece - all angles should be 90 degrees and opposite sides of the same length. Finish the raw edges with the binding. |
|
|
Have fun! |
