Six Color Spiral Shoulder Purse
This tutorial guides you through creating a small shoulder purse that combines practicality with a vibrant design. You’ll learn how to sew, quilt, and embellish the bag with a six-color spiral machine embroidery pattern. It’s the perfect project when you need a compact yet spacious bag for your essentials.

We used the design Six Color Spiral for the large hoop (5" x 7")

The finished size of the purse is about 6 1/2" W x 9" H x 2" D.

Embroidery:
Open the color card, select threads. Stabilize a piece of black fabric with medium-weight cut-away stabilizer. Hoop the fabric tightly. Upload the Six Color Spiral file into your machine and embroider it.

Cut away the excess stabilizer, trim the stitch-out to approximately 10" x 12", leaving the embroidery in the center of the piece.
Making Panels:
Out of the fabric, cut 3 more pieces measuring 10" x 12".
Out of batting, cut 2 pieces measuring 10" x 12" each.
Make 2 "sandwiches":
  • fabric - batting - fabric
  • fabric - batting - stitch-out .
Pin all layers together.
We quilted in a free-motion style all over the pieces. On the "sandwich" with the stitch-out, start from the center, and echo-quilt the emboidery first.
Trim both quilted pieces to 8" x 10".
Finish the raw edges with zig-zag stitch or on a serger.
The raw edges of both panels are finished with the serger.

Position the panels face to face, align all edges. Pin the bottom. Stitch together with seam allowance 1/2".
Open and press the seam.
Topstitch 1/4" on both sides of the seam.

Pocket:
For the pocket, out of black fabric, cut 2 squares 8" x 8" each.
Finish the raw edges with zig-zag stitch or on a serger.
Sew the zipper between these 2 squares:
  • Place the edge of the zipper tape on the edge of one square with right sides together. Use your zipper foot and stitch, with 3/8" seam allowance.
  • Repeat for the second part of the zipper and the second fabric square.
  • Turn right side up, press the seams, topstitch 1/8" from each seam.

Fold the piece with right side inwards. Align the edges, pin together. Stitch the bottom, seam allowance 1/2". Press the seam open. You'll get a tube with the zipper on the upper side and stitched lower side.
Turn the tube right side out.

To make box corners, separate the front and back panels at the corners. Center the seam on the side with the bottom seam.
Measure 1" along the seam from the corner.
Draw a line perpendicular to the seam across the corner and machine-stitch it several times.
Box corners are made at the bottom side of the purse.

Finish the upper raw edge with bias tape.

Handles:
To attach the handle, you will need 2 loops. Out of black fabric, cut 2 strips 3" x 5" each.
A black strips measuring 3" x 5".

Fold the strips lengthwise in half and press. Fold the long raw edges inside to the crease line and press.
Tuck the long raw edges inside and press.

Topstitch along each side of the working pieces with seam allowance 1/8". Thread them into the rings of the handle. Stitch the ends close. Finish with zig-zag.
The loops are attached to the handle.

Pin the loops to the sides at the upper edge on the inside of the purse about 1" deep and machine-stitch along all edges.
