Welcome to our Quilted Placemats with Bamboo Embroidery tutorial. In this guide, you will learn how to sew, quilt, and machine embroider a set of four beautiful placemats. Follow the step-by-step instructions to create unique, handmade pieces that will add a touch of elegance to any table setting. Let's get started!
This is a very easy project for beginners, both to quilt and embroider.
We used the designs from the Bamboo Border Set. The finished size of each placemat is about 13" x 15 1/2".

- light-weight cut-away embroidery stabilizer;
- fabric for the backing;

Cutting:
|
Note: the cutting listed here is for one placemat. |
Out of the black fabric, cut
- a central piece measuring 8 1/2" x 11 1/2";
- 2 strips measuring 2 1/2" x 12 1/2" and
- 2 strips measuring 2 1/2" x 13 1/2".
|
Out of the green fabric, cut
- 2 strips measuring 1" x 11 1/2" and
- 2 strips measuring 1" x 9 1/2".
Use the remaining fabric of this shade for the binding. |
Assembly:
|
Note: seam allowance is 1/4" if otherwise recommended, press the seam immediately after you make it. |
Sew the green 1" x 11 1/2" strips to the upper and lower edges of the black 8 1/2" x 11 1/2" piece. |
|
Sew the green 1" x 9 1/2" strips to the left and right edges of the working piece. |
|
Sew the black 2 1/2" x 12 1/2" strips to the upper and lower edges of the working piece. |
|
Sew the black 2 1/2" x 13 1/2" strips to the shorter edges of the working piece. |
|
Embroidery |
Select the files you like from the Bamboo Border Set. Upload them into your machine.
Stabilize the central part.
Hoop the fabric tightly and embroider the designs in the corners of the central rectangle within the green borders.
|
Quilting and Finishing
|
Now place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.
Pin all layers together. We quilted in a free-motion style all over the working piece. Start from the central part, and echo-quilt the emboidery first. |
|
Press with heavy steam. Square the piece - all corners should be 90 degrees and opposite sides of the same length.
Finish the raw edges with the binding. |
