Welcome to our tutorial on creating a modern wall quilt featuring one-color poppies embroidery. In this guide, we'll walk you through the process of piecing together your quilt, quilting it, embroidering it and adding a final touch with permanent fabric markers. With clear instructions and simple techniques, you'll soon have a charming quilt to adorn your space. Let's get started on this creative journey!
We used the design of One-Color Bouquet of Poppies for the Mega Hoop. The Large Hoop designs will work as well. The finished size of the quilt is about 11" x 13 1/2".

Embroidery: |
Upload the file of the One-Color Bouquet of Poppies to the embroidery machine. Stabilize the piece of white fabric. Hoop the fabric tightly and embroider the design.
Cutting:
Trim the stitch-out leaving the following margins: 1" on the left, 1 1/4" on the botto, 2 1/2" on the right and 3 1/2" on the top. The final measurements of the central part should be 9" x 11 1/2". |
Out of black and white fabric, cut
- 1 strip measuring 1 1/2" x 11 1/2" and
- 1 strip measuring 1 1/2" x 10".
Out of red-and-black fabric, cut
- 1 strip measuring 1 1/2" x 12 1/2" and
- 1 strip measuring 1 1/2" x 11".
Assembly:
Note: seam allowance is 1/4" unless otherwise recommended, press the seam immediately after you make it. |
Sew the black-and-white 1 1/2" x 11 1/2" strip to the left edge of the central part. Sew the black-and-white 1 1/2" x 10" strip to the lower edge of the central part.
Sew the red-and-black 1 1/2" x 12 1/2" strip to the left edge of the working piece. Sew the black-and-white 1 1/2" x 11" strip to the lower edge of the working piece. |
Quilting and Finishing
Now place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.
Pin all layers together. We quilted in a free-motion style all over the working piece. Start from the central part, and echo-quilt the emboidery first. |
Press with heavy steam. Square the piece - all angles should be 90 degrees and opposite sides of the same length. Finish the raw edges with the black binding. |
Prepare your coloring media. Read the manufacturer's instructions and try the media on a scrap of fabric first. Color the quilt. |
We colored only the petals of the poppies to give the quilt a modern look. Feel free to add some green as well. But in that case, we recommend green binding. |
Have fun! |
