In this tutorial, you'll learn how to create a festive Poinsettia Bouquet Wall Quilt, perfect for the holiday season. We'll guide you through sewing the quilt, adding 3D poinsettias with machine embroidery, and embellishing it with Christmas ornaments. This project combines sewing, quilting, and embroidery to create a decorative piece that will bring holiday cheer to your home.
We used the designs from the Applique Christmas Ball Set and 3D Organza Poinsettia (all designs fit into a small 4" x 4" hoop).
The finished size of the quilt is about 23" x 16". But you can easily make the quilt smaller or larger. |
|
You will need :
- embroidery threads either polyester or rayon, (we changed the colors to match the colors of the fabrics we used);
- about 1/2 yard of light-colored fabric with unobtrusive pattern;
- scraps of black (for the vase) and red (for the applique) fabrics;
- red organza or light-weight silky polyester fabric;
- wash-away embroidery stabilizer;
- white craft polyester felt;
- fabric for the backing;
- fabric for the binding;
- batting;
- quilter's ruler;
- rotary cutter;
- iron;
- #12 universal needle;
- quilting threads (black and variegated in jewell tones);
- #12-#14 quilting needle.
|
Cutting:
|
Out of the light-colored fabric, cut
- 2 strips each measuring 6 1/2" x 22 1/2";
- 1 piece measuring 4 1/2" x 4" and
- a strip measuring 4 1/2" x 12 1/2".
|
Out of the black fabric, cut 1 piece measuring 4 1/2" x 7" for the vase. |
Assembly:
|
Note: seam allowance is 1/4" if otherwise recommended, press the seam immediately after you make it. |
Sew the light-colored colored 4 1/2" x 4" piece to the black 4 1/2" x 7" piece. Then sew the 4 1/2" x 12 1/2" light-colored strip to the other side of the black piece.
|
|
Sew the the light-colored 6 1/2" x 22 1/2" strips to the left and right edges of the light-and-black strip. |
|
Embroidery |
Upload the 2 files of your choice from the Christmas Ball Applique Set to the embroidery machine.
Select threads. Stabilize the lower part of the quilt with polyester craft felt.
Hoop the fabric tightly and embroider the designs - one slightly overlapping the black fabric (vase), and the other close to the first one.
Neatly cut away the felt around the stitch-outs.

|
To give the applique a trapunto look, out of the felt, cut 2 circles 1/4" smaller than the stitch-outs. Place them on the stitch-outs. |
|
Out of the felt, cut 2 more circles 1/4" smaller than the first ones. Place them on the stitch-outs. |
|
Baste the circles in place with a contrast thread. You can use a temporary fabric glue if you prefer, but we think basting is easier. |
|
Quilting and Finishing
|
Now place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.
Pin all layers together. We quilted in a free-motion style all over the working piece. Start from the embroidery, and echo-quilt the Christmas ornaments. Then quilt the vase with parallel lines, and then all over the quilt. Remove the baste stitches. |
|
Press with heavy steam. Square the piece - all angles should be 90 degrees and opposite sides of the same length. Finish the raw edges with the binding. |
|
Embroidery of Poinsettias:
|
Upload the files from the 3D Organza Poinsettia and following the instructions, embroider as many flowers as you want. We used 7 flowers. After the stitch-outs are dry and ready, pin them onto the quilt to form a bouquet. |
|
Using white thread and a quilting foot, topstitch the flowers to the quilt over the center of the flowers. |
|
Have fun! |
