One way to incorporate machine embroidery into your wardrobe is by embellishing ready-made clothes. In this project, we will be using a mushroom applique design to decorate a kid's t-shirt. The mushroom applique is a whimsical and playful design that will add a touch of fun and personality to any child's outfit.
This project is perfect for beginners who are new to machine embroidery or for experienced embroiderers looking for a fun and easy project. With a little creativity and imagination, you can create unique and personalized designs that will make any plain t-shirt stand out. So, let's get started and create a one-of-a-kind t-shirt! We used designs from the Mushroom Applique Set. All three designs are for the small (4" x 4") hoop.

You will need :
- embroidery threads, either polyester or rayon, (we recommend to use our colors cards, but you can chose your own colors for these particular designs),
- a T-shirt,
- fabric for the applique,
- light-weight cut-away embroidery stabilizer (we used No-show mesh by Floriani),
- applique scissors,
- sewing pins,
- a scrap of knit fabric for test embroidery (you can use an old T-shirt).
Applique Embroidery:
First of all make a test stitch-out on a scrap of knit fabric, this will help you to select the correct stabilizer, thread tension, applique fabric and threads.
All designs from the Mushroom Applique Set are embroidered in the same way.
Step 1: Upload any file from the set into the machine. Hoop your base knit fabric stabilized with light-weight cut-away stabilizer. Tighten the hoop!
Start the machine. The first color embroiders the area for the applique fabric. |
Step 2: Cover the outline with applique fabric. Pin the applique fabric to the base fabric. Take care to pin outside the embroidery field. You can also use temporary fabric adhesive.
Start the machine. The second color will embroider the same outline and stop.
Step 3: Take the hoop from the machine. With a pair of sharp scissors, cut away the excess applique fabric around the outlines. Cut as close to the stitches as possible, take care not to cut through the stitches. |
Step 4: The third color embroiders the mushroom gills, and the last, fourth, color will finish the raw edges of the applique fabric on the caps and embroider the stems.

Embroidery on a T-shirt:
After you tested the designs on similar fabric, you can proceed with embroidering on a T-shirt.
Mark the position of the embroidery on the T-shirt. If you have a printer and embroidery software, print-outs of the designs can be helpful. If you do not, you can cut out rectangles of the same size as the designs and arrange them on the item to determine the position of the embroidery.
Stabilize the chosen area. Hoop the fabric tightly and embroider the designs one by one, starting with the central one. Use small, 4" x 4" hoop and a separate piece of stabilizer for each design. Cut away the stabilizer around the embroidery after each stitch-out.
