Dive into a unique blend of quilting and embroidery with our "Coloring Wall Quilt" project. This compact quilt boasts one-color machine embroidery of Thomas Eakins' masterwork, The Champion Single Sculls. Once quilted, we colored the embroidery in using permanent fabric markers.
The finished size of the quilt is about 14 1/2" x 17". |
|
You will need :
- embroidery threads, either polyester or rayon, in either navy or black,
- about 1/2 yard of light blue fabric - solid or gradient colored;
- a scrap of blue fabric darker than the background color, for the first border (if you have enough of this fabric, you can use it for the binding too);
- light-weight cut-away embroidery stabilizer;
- fabric for the backing and binding (we used forest green binding);
- colored fabric pencils or markers;
- batting;
- quilter's ruler;
- rotary cutter;
- iron;
- #12 universal needle;
- quilting threads;
- #12-#14 quilting needle.

Embroidery: |
Upload the file of the The Champion Single Sculls by Thomas Eakins to the embroidery machine. Prepare threads. Stabilize the piece of light blue fabric. Hoop the fabric tightly and embroider the design. Trim the stitch-out to 10 1/2" x 12 1/2", leaving equal margins aroud the embroidery. |
Cutting the other Parts of the Quilt:
|
Note: when you're asked to cut 2 parts, preferably cut them out of the same fabric. |
For the first border, out of the dark blue fabric, cut 2 strips measuring 1" x 12 1/2", and 2 strips of measuring 1" x 11 1/2". |
For the second border, out of the same fabric which you used for the embroidery background, cut 2 strips measuring 2 1/2" x 13 1/2", and 2 strips measuring 2 1/2" x 15 1/2". |
Assembly:
|
Note: seam allowance is 1/4", press the seam immediately after you make it. |
Sew the 1" x 12 1/2" strips to the upper and lower edges of the central part.
|
|
Sew the 1" x 11 1/2" strips to the left and right edges of the central part.
|
|
Sew the 2 1/2" x 13 1/2" strips to the upper and lower edges of the working piece. |
|
Sew the 2 1/2" x 15 1/2" strips to the left and right edges of the working piece. |
|
Coloring: |
Using fabric pencils or markers, color the picture to your liking. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on how to fix the pigments. |
|
Quilting and Finishing
|
Now place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.
Pin all layers together.
We quilted in a free-motion style all over the quilt, trying to imitate water ripples on the bottom half of the quilt and clouds on the top. |
Press with heavy steam. Square the piece - the opposite sides should be of the same length and all angles 90 degrees.
Finish the raw edges with the binding. |
Have fun! |
