We used the one-color design Women on the Beach at Futamigaura for the commercial hoop.
The finished size of the quilt is about 17" x 19".

You will need :
- embroidery threads either polyester or rayon of dark blue color,
- small amount of very pale blue, sky blue, and royal blue fabrics;
- about 1/4 yard of patterned blue fabric with marble or wave pattern;
- light-weight cut-away embroidery stabilizer;
- batting;
- quilter's ruler;
- rotary cutter;
- iron;
- #12 universal needle;
- quilting threads ( the colors of the fabrics you use);
- #12-#14 quilting needle.

Embroidery: |
Upload the file of Women on the Beach at Futamigaura into your embroidery machine. Hoop the palest of your blue fabrics with light-weight cut-away stabilizer. Hoop them tightly and embroider the design. |
Trim the stitch-out to 9 1/2" x 11" rectangle, leaving equal margins around the embroidery. If your stabilizer is light-weight, you do not need to remove it. |

Cutting :
|
Out of sky blue fabric, cut
- 2 strips measuring 1" x 9 1/2" and
- 2 strips measuring 1" x 12 1/2".
Out of royal blue fabric, cut
- 2 strips measuring 12" x 10 1/2" and
- 2 strips measuring 1" x 13 1/2".
Out of the patterned fabric for the outer borders, cut
- 2 strips measuring 3 1/2" x 11 1/2" and
- 2 strips measuring 3 1/2" x 19 1/2".
Use any of the remaining fabrics for the binding.

Assembly:

Note: seam allowance is 1/4", press the seam immediately after you make it. |
Sew the sky blue 1" x 9 1/2" strips to the upper and lower edges of the stitch-out. Sew the sky blue 1" x 12 1/2" strips to the left and right edges of the stitch-out.

Sew the royal blue 1" x 10 1/2" strips to the to the upper and lower edges of the central piece. Sew the royal blue 1" x 13 1/2" strips to the left and right edges of the central piece. |

Sew the patterned 3 1/2" x 11 1/2" strips to the upper and lower edges of the working piece. Sew the patterned 3 1/2" x 19 1/2" strips to the left and right edges of the working piece. The top is ready. |

Quilting and Finishing
|
Now place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.
Pin all layers together.
We quilted in the ditch around the embroidery and in a free-motion style all over the quilt. |
Press with heavy steam. Square the piece and trim it to 13" x 17".
Finish the raw edges with the binding. |
