Love-Themed Quilted Mug Rugs with Embroidery
Quilted mug rugs are quick and easy, and make a nice gift. We used designs from the Valentine Heart Set, Valentine Heart Set II, and Swirl Accents Set II.

The finished size of the rugs is 8" x 8", but you can make them smaller or larger if you wish.

Cutting:
Out of white/light cream and pink fabric each, cut a square measuring 10 1/2" x 10 1/2".
Assembly:
Note: seam allowance is 1/4", press the seam immediately after you make it.
Place both squares face-to-face. With a pencil, lightly draw a diagonal on the top square. Stitch 1/4" from the pencil line on both sides.

Cut along the line. Open the new squares, press the seam towards the darker triangle. Trim the "ears".

Embroidery:
Sew the strips of muslin to all sides of the squares.

Mark the position of the embroidery. If you have a printer and embroidery software, print-outs of the designs can be helpful. If you do not, you can cut out squares and rectangles of the same size as the designs and arrange them on the fabric to determine the position of the embroidery.
Stabilize the chosen area. Hoop the fabric tightly and embroider the designs one by one.
Paper print-outs of the designs on the embroidery field.
Cut away the excess stabilizer around the embroidery.
Quilting and Finishing
Now place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.

Pin all layers together.

We quilted in a free-motion style all over the quilt.
Press with heavy steam. Square and trim to desired size. Finish the raw edges with the binding.

Have fun!
