You will need :
- embroidery threads, either polyester or rayon - the choice of colors depends on the colors of your fabrics,
- scraps or strips 2 1/2" wide of 6 fabrics (we chose 3 shades of green, 2 shades of pink and one yellow)
- about 1/2 yard of light-colored fabric - pale lemon, light cream, off-white or any other light hue which will match the colors of the scraps,
- binding, we used batik with green-yellow shades,
- light-weight cut-away embroidery stabilizer,
- fabric for the backing,
- batting,
- quilter's ruler,
- rotary cutter and cutting mat,
- OR chalk pencil and scissors (if you do not work with the rotary cutter)
- iron,
- #12 universal needle,
- #12-#14 quilting needle
Cutting:
Out of the scraps, cut squares measuring 2 1/2", you will need 102 squares, 17 of each color.
Out of light-colored fabric, cut a piece measuring 16 1/2" x 25".
Assembly:
Note: seam allowance is 1/4", press the seam immediately after you make it. |
Sew the squares into 17 strips, 6 squares per strip.
Sew the strips together into a rectangle 6 squares by 17 squares. |
Position a quilter's ruler along a diagonal, from the top left corner to the corner of the sixth square (counting from the left) on the lower edge. Move the ruler 1/4" to the left to leave 1/4" of seam allowance. Cut. |
Place the ruler to connect the corner of the sixth square in the top row (counting from the right edge) and the corner of the bottom corner square. Move the ruler 1/4" to the right to leave 1/4" seam allowance. Cut.
Note: Do not discard the cut-away parts, you can use them for another project, e.g. two matching placemats. |
Place the 16 1/2" x 25" rectangle on the cutting mat, measure 4" from the upper left corner along the long side. Place the colored piece over the rectangle, matching the upper left corner with the 4" mark. Smooth the colored piece aligning its short sides with the sides of the rectangle. Pin both pieces together. Place the ruler along the long side of the colored piece and cut.
You will get 2 shapes like these:
Sew them to the long sides of the colored piece |
Embroidery:
Upload the files from the Tulip Set into the machine. Select threads.
Mark the position of the embroidery on the central part. If you have a printer and embroidery software, print-outs of the designs can be helpful. If you do not, you can cut out rectangles of the same size as the designs and arrange them on the fabric to determine the position of the embroidery.
Stabilize the chosen area. Hoop the fabric tightly and embroider the designs one by one. If you need to embroider a design close to the edge, we recommend to sew strips of muslin to the edges of the working piece for better hooping.

Quilting and Finishing
Now place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.
Pin all layers together.
We quilted in a free-motion style all over the quilt. |
Press with heavy steam. Square the quilt. Finish the raw edges with the binding. |
Have fun! |
