Cutting:

Out of the main fabric, for the central part, cut
- a piece measuring 10 1/2" x 14 1/2",
- 2 strips measuring 3 1/2" x 9 1/2",
- 2 strips measuting 3 1/2" x 12 1/2",
- 2 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 4 1/2",
- 2 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 6 1/2",
- 2 squares measuring 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" and
- 5 squares measuring 3 3/8".
Out of blue fabric, cut
- 2 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 10 1/2",
- 2 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 16 1/2",
- 1 square measuring 3 3/8".
Use the remaining blue fabric for the binding.
Out of sky blue and bright yellow scraps, cut 2 squares each measuring 3 3/8".

Assembly:
Note: seam allowance is 1/4", press the seam immediately after you make it. |
Sew the 1 1/2" x 10 1/2" blue strips to the upper and lower edges of the central part. |
Sew the 1 1/2" x 16 1/2" blue strips to the left and right edges of the central part. Set the central part aside for the time being. |
Sewing Half-Triangle Squares: |
Prepare the five 3 3/8" main fabric squares and five 3 3/8" accent color squares (in our case they are 2 sky blue, 2 bright yellow and 1 blue). Place each main fabric square face-to-face with an accent color one. You'll have 5 pairs.
With a pencil, draw a diagonal on the top square. Stitch 1/4" from the pencil line on both sides. |
Cut along the line. Open the new squares, press the seam towards the dark triangle. Trim the "ears". You need a total of ten 2 1/2" half-triangle squares: 4 sky blue, 4 yellow and 2 dark blue. |
Assembly of the Borders:
For the left and right borders, sew the 2 half-triangle squares together. Add the 1 1/2" x 4 1/2" main fabric strip as shown below. Repeat with 2 more half-triangle squares and the remaining 1 1/2 x 4 1/2" strip. |
Sew the 3 1/2" x 12 1/2" strips to the blocks as shown below: |
Sew these strips to the left and right edges of the central part as shown below. |
Sew 3 half-triangle squares together into a strip. Add a 1 1/2" x 6 1/2" main fabric strip as shown below. Repeat with 3 more half-triangle squares and the remaining 1 1/2 x 6 1/2" strip. |
Sew the 3 1/2" squares and 3 1/2" x 9 1/2" to the ends of the new strips as shown below: |
Sew these strips to the upper and lower edges of the working piece as shown below: |
Embroidery:
Mark the position of the embroidery on the central part. Stabilize the chosen area. Hoop the fabric tightly. Upload the file of the Blue Peacock to the machine, select threads. Embroider the design.
Quilting and Finishing
Now place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.
Pin all layers together.
We quilted in a free-motion style all over the quilt, mostly following the floral pattern of the fabric. |
Press with heavy steam. Square the quilt. Finish the raw edges with the binding. |
Have fun! |
