- 2 strips measuring 4 1/2" x 20 1/2" and
- 2 strips measuring 4 1/2" x 32 1/2".
Out of dark-colored fabric, cut 4 strips 1 1/4" wide and the length of the width of the fabric.
Assembly:
Note: seam allowance is 1/4", press the seam immediately after you make it. |
Sew the 3 light and 3 dark strips in pairs along the long sides.
Subcut the new strips into 12 1/2" long strips. You will need 12 strips.
Sew these 12 strips together into a rectangle. |
From the remaining dark 1 1/4" wide strip, cut a strip measuring 12 1/2", and sew it to the bottom of the working piece.
Sew the 4 1/2" x 32 1/2" to the long sides, sew the 4 1/2" x 20 1/2" to the short sides of the working piece. |
Placemats: |
Cutting: |
Out of the light fabric, cut
- 2 strips 2 1/2" wide and the length of the width of the fabric, and
- 4 pieces measuring 10 1/2" x 12".
Out of dark-colored fabric, cut 3 strips 1 1/4" wide and the length of the width of the fabric. |
Assembly: |
Sew the 2 light and 2 dark strips in pairs along the long sides. |
Subcut the new strips into 6 1/2" long strips. For 4 placemats, you will need 16 strips. |
Sew these strips together into rectangles, 4 strips in each piece. |
Subcut the remaining dark 1 1/4" wide strip into 4 strips measuring 6 1/2" each, and sew them to the bottom of the working pieces. |
Sew the 10 1/2" x 12" rectangles to the striped pieces. |
Embroidery:
Mark the position of the embroidery on the runner and placematst. If you have a printer and embroidery software, print-outs of the designs can be helpful. If you do not, you can cut out rectangles of the same size as the designs and arrange them on the fabric to determine the position of the embroidery.
Stabilize the chosen area. Hoop the fabric tightly and embroider the designs one by one.

Quilting and Finishing
Now place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.
Pin all layers together.
We quilted in a free-motion style all over the quilt. |
Press with heavy steam. Square the working pieces. Finish the raw edges with the binding. |
Have fun! |
