Assembly:
Note: seam allowance is 1/4", press the seam immediately after you make it. |
Sew all squares in rows.
- First row: purple - cream - green.
- Second row: cream - purple - cream - green.
- Third row: green - cream - purple - cream - green.
- Fourth row: green - cream - purple - cream.
- Fifth row: green - cream - purple.
Don't lose track of which row is which!
Sew the rows together as shown on the picture below. All the similar colored squares should end up on a diagonal. The longest, purple diagonal runs down the center, then 2 cream diagonals on each side of the purple one, and 2 green diagonals on the edges.
Position the quilter's ruler on a diagonal across the green squares and cut away the corners. Repeat on the other side.
Sew the green 2 1/2" x 26 1/2" strips to the left and right edges of the working piece. Press open.
Cut away the protruding corners of the green strips. |
At this point your working piece will look like this:
Take a 2 1/2" x 14 1/2"green strip. Starting from the tip of the purple square, align the strip with the edge. The end of the strip will slightly protrude beyond the green border. Pin. Stitch. Press open. Cut away the protruding corner.
Take a 2 1/2" x 17" green strip. Stitch it to the last edge that doesn't have a border. The end of the strip will slightly protrude beyond the green border on one of the long sides. Pin. Stitch. Press open. Cut away the protruding corner. |
Embroidery:
Mark the position of the embroidery in each cream square. If you have a printer and embroidery software, print-outs of the designs can be helpful. If you do not, you can cut out paper shapes of the same size as the designs and arrange them on the fabric to determine the position of the embroidery.
Stabilize the chosen area. Hoop the fabric tightly and embroider the designs one by one.
Quilting and Finishing
Now place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.
Pin all layers together. We quilted in a free-motion style all over the tablerunner. |
Press with heavy steam. Square the quilt. Finish the raw edges with the binding. |
Have fun! |
