This small Christmas-themed wall quilt features easy construction with traditional pieced blocks. We used designs from the One-Color Winter Bird Set.

You will need :
- red embroidery threads either polyester or rayon
- about 1/4 yard of white fabric for embroidered and pieced blocks,
- about 1/4 yard of white patterned fabric for the pieced blocks and the first border,
- about 1/2 yard of red patterned fabric for the pieced blocks, second border, and binding,
- light-weight cut-away embroidery stabilizer,
- fabric for the backing,
- batting,
- quilter's ruler,
- rotary cutter,
- iron,
- #12 universal needle,
- #12-#14 quilting needle.

Cutting:
|
Out of the white fabric, cut
- 5 squares measuring 6 1/2" x 6 1/2", and
- a strip 1 1/2" wide and the length of the width of the fabric.
Subcut the strip into
- 16 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" each and
- 16 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 4 1/2" each.
Out of white patterned fabric, cut a strip 1 1/2" wide and the length the fabric permits, subcut it into 32 squares, each measuring 1 1/2" x 1 1/2". Out of the same fabric, cut the strips for the first border:
- 2 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 18 1/2" and
- 2 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 20 1/2".
Out of red patterned fabric, cut
- 4 squares measuring 2 1/2" x 2 1/2", and
- the strips for the second border:
- 2 strips measuring 3 1/2" x 20 1/2", and
- 2 strips measuring 3 1/2" x 26 1/2".
Use the remaining red fabric for the binding.

Assembly:
|
Note: seam allowance is 1/4", press the seam immediately after you make it. |
Block: |
Sew the white patterned 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" squares to both ends of the 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" white strips. You should get 8 of them.

Sew the white-and-red 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" squares to both ends of the 1 1/2" x 4 1/2" white strips. You should get 8 of them. |

Sew the white 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" strips to the upper and lower edges of the red patterned 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" squares.
|

Sew the 4 1/2" long strips from step 1 to the left and right edges of the central part.
|
|
Sew the white 1 1/2" x 4 1/2" strips to the upper and lower edges of the working piece.
|
|
Sew the 6 1/2" strips from Step 2 to the left and right edges of the working piece.
|
|
You need 4 pieced blocks. |
Quilt Assembly: |
Sew the pieced blocks and white squares into rows. The first and the third rows consist of 2 white and 1 pieced block: white - pieced- white. The second row consisists of 1 white and 2 pieced blocks: pieced - white - pieced.

Sew the rows together.
|
|
Add the first border.
|
|
Add the second border.
|
|
Embroidery:
|
Choose 5 designs from the One-Color Winter Bird Set.
Stabilize the white blocks with light-weight cut-away stabilizer. Hoop the fabric tightly and embroider the designs one by one.
Cut away the stabilizer only around the outer lines of the embroidery, leave the stabilizer inside the embroidery

Quilting and Finishing
|
Now place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.
Pin all layers together.
We quilted in a free-motion style all over the quilt. |
|
Press with heavy steam. Square the quilt. Finish the raw edges with the binding. |
|
