This set of 4 placemats and a tablerunner is very quick and easy to put together. It requires only basic sewing skills. We used the embroidery designs from the Fall Leaf Set.
The finished size of the tablerunner is about 16" x 36 1/2", and each placemat is 17" x 13 1/2". The sizes can be easily adjusted to your needs.

Cutting:
Out of the fabric for the top, lining and batting each, cut a piece measuring 17" x 37", for the tablerunner and 4 pieces measuring 14" x 17 1/2" for the placemats. Please note that you can easily change the sizes at this stage.
Embroidery:
Place the tablerunner top on your working table, right side up. With the help of a ruler and chalk draw a vertical line dividing the fabric into 2 equal parts lengthwise.
Mark the position of the embroidery around this central line. If you have a printer and embroidery software, print-outs of the designs can be helpful. If you do not, you can cut out rectangles of the same size as the designs and arrange them on the fabric to determine the position of the embroidery.
Working with one design at a time, stabilize its area, hoop the fabric tightly and embroider it.
Cut away the excess stabilizer.
After all designs are embroidered, press the working piece.
With the placemats, we embroidered 3 leaves in a column close to one of the shorter sides.
Assembly:
Note: seam allowance is slightly more than 1/4", press the seam immediately after you make it. Both the tablerunner and placemat are sewn in the same way.
Place the lining on the table, right side up. Cover with the batting/felt. Align the edges. Cover with the top (embroidered piece), with right side down. Align and pin the edges.
Sew through all 3 layers along the edges, leaving about 10" opening on one of the long sides.
Working with one corner at a time, measure 3" along the seam on both sides from the corner. Place a plate to connect the marks and draw an arc.
Topstitch along the arc. Repeat for all corners.
Cut away the corner along the arc with seam allowance slightly more than 1/4". |
Cut away the batting from the seam allowance very close to the stitches
Make notches on the curve. Repeat on all curves.
Through the opening turn the working piece right side out. Straighten all sides and curves. Press all seams carefully. Tack the opening edges inwards. Press.
Topstitch along all edges 1/4" from the edge, then topstitch again very close to the edge.
Have fun! |
