This small art quilt is easy to make. We used the embroidery design Woman with Flowers by Alphonse Mucha and the freestanding flowers from the 3D Organza Flower Set.
The finished size of the quilt is about 18" x 18".
The construction of the quilt is very simple; the most important step is finding suitable fabrics.
You will need :
- embroidery threads either polyester or rayon - black, or any other very dark hue to your taste,
- a piece of solid white, ivory or cream fabric for the central part,
- about 1/4 yard of patterned fabric - any black floral pattern on a white, ivory or cream background,
- bright-colored fabric for the binding,
- light-weight cut-away embroidery stabilizer,
- fabric for the backing,
- batting,
- quilter's ruler, rotary cutter, iron,
- #12 embroidery needle,
- #12 universal needle
- #12-14 quilting needle.
- (optional) if you are not using the flowers from the 3D Organza Flower Set, you can buy some silk flowers
Embroidery:
Upload the file Woman with Flowers by Alphonse Mucha into the machine. Stabilize the light-colored fabric with light-weight cut-away stabilizer. Hoop fabric tightly and embroider the design.
Trim the stitch-out to 10 1/2" x 10 1/2" square. Cut away the excess stabilizer around the embroidery, do not remove the stabilizer under the embroidery.
Cutting:
Out of fabric for the borders, cut
- 2 strips measuring 4 1/2" x 10 1/2",
- 2 strips measuring 4 1/2" x 18 1/2".
Out of fabric for the binding, cut 2 strips 2 1/2" wide and the length of the width of the fabric.
Assembly:
Note: seam allowance is 1/4", press the seam immediately after you make it. |
Sew the 4 1/2" x 10 1/2" strips to the upper and lower edges of the central part.
Sew the 4 1/2" x 18 1/2" strips to the left and right edges of the working piece.
Quilting and Finishing
Now place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.
Pin all layers together. We quilted in a free-motion style all over the quilt. |
Press with heavy steam. Square the quilt. Finish the raw edges with colored binding. To add some color, sew on the organza flowers or silk flowers.
Have fun! |
