Over time, a lot of test stitch-outs accumulate in our workshop. In this project we used some of the test stitch-outs to make a doll-sized quilt. The quilt can be used as a doll bed quilt or as a table topper (for a person sized table). We used the designs from the Geometric Flower Set and Tudor Rose Motif.
The finished size of the quilt is about 19" x 19".

Embroidery
We used test stitch-outs from our stash. We used the stitch-outs of the Tudor Rose Motif, for the central part of the quilt, and 4 stitch-outs from the Geometric Flower Set, for the corners. |
Trim the central stitch-out to a 7 1/2" x 7 1/2" square. Trim the flower stitch-outs to 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" squares.
Cutting:
Note: we describe the fabric colors as used in our quilt. Depending on the colors of your embroidery, you might use different colors.
For the first border, out of grass green fabric, cut
- 4 strips measuring 2" x 7 1/2" and
out of white fabric, cut
- 4 squares measuring 2" x 2".
For the second border, out of yellow and lime fabrics each, cut
- 4 strips measuring 2" x 10 1/2".
We also used the yellow fabric for the binding, you'll need 2 strips 2 1/2" wide and the length of the width of the fabric, or a strip measuring 2 1/2" x 85".
For the third border, out of grass green fabric, cut
- 2 strips measuring 2" x 16 1/2" and
- 2 strips measuring 2" x 19 1/2".
Assembly:
Note: seam allowance is 1/4". Press the seam immediately after you make it.
Sew 2 of the 2" x 7 1/2" strips to the upper and lower edges of the central part.
Sew the 2" squares to the ends of the remaining 2" x 7 1/2" strips.
Sew these strips to the left and right edges of the central part.
Sew the yellow and lime 2" x 10 1/2" strips in 4 pairs.
Sew 2 pairs to the upper and lower edges of the central part.
Sew the embroidered 3 1/2" squares to the ends of the remaining 2 pairs.
Sew the strips with embroidered squares to the left and right edges of the central part.
Sew the 2" x 16 1/2" strips to the upper and lower edges of the working piece.
Sew the 2" x 19 1/2" strips to the left and right edges of the working piece.
Quilting and Finishing:
Now place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.
Pin all layers together. We quilted in a free-motion style all over the piece. |
Press with heavy steam. Square the quilt. Finish the raw edges with the binding. |
You can also make a couple of pillows with the test stitch-outs from the Geometric Flower Set.
