This is a small wall quilt for horse lovers. It features designs from the Horse Silhouette Set.
The finished size of the quilt is about 26" x 27".

The contruction of the quilt is very simple. The funnest part is picking out the right themed fabrics to use.
You will need :
- embroidery threads either polyester or rayon - black, dark brown, or any other very dark color will work,
- 1 fat quarter for the central part (we chose sandy-beige with a faint grass pattern),
- about 1/2 yard each of 2 themed patterned fabrics - we picked a charcoal fabric featuring a rope lasso pattern and tawny brown fabric featuring stars and horseshoes,
- light-weight cut-away embroidery stabilizer,
- fabric for the backing,
- batting,
- quilter's ruler, rotary cutter,
- iron,
- #12 universal needle,
- #12-14 quilting needle,
- fabric pencils, markers or ink (optional).

- 1 strip measuring 1 1/2" x 20 1/2",
- 1 strip measuring 4 1/2" x 19 1/2" and
- 1 strip measuring 4 1/2" x 27 1/2" ?
Out of tawny fabric, cut
- 1 strip measuring 1 1/2" x 17 1/2",

Sew the charcoal 4 1/2" x 19 1/2" strip to the left edge of the working piece. Sew the tawny 3 1/2" x 19 1/2" strip to the right edge of the working piece.
Sew the charcoal 4 1/2" x 27 1/2" strip to the lower edge of the working piece. Sew the tawny 3 1/2" x 27 1/2" strip to the upper edge of the working piece.
Embroidery:
Mark the position of the embroidery on the central part. If you have a printer and embroidery software, print-outs of the designs will be helpful. If not, you can cut out rectangles of the size of the designs and use them to position the designs.
Stabilize the chosen areas. Hoop the fabric tightly and embroider the designs one by one.
Quilting and Finishing
Now place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.
Pin all layers together.
We quilted in a free-motion style all over the quilt. |
Press with heavy steam. Square the quilt. Finish the raw edges with the binding. |
Optional: color patches of grass with fabric inks, markers, or pencils.
Have fun! |
