This small Fall-themed wall or door quilt is a great weekend project. We used designs from the Pumpkin Set and Freestanding Autumn Leaves Set.
The finished size of the quilt is about 16" x 19".
You will need :
- embroidery threads, either polyester or rayon according to our color cards,
- 1 fat quarter for the central part (we chose a sandy beige color),
- small amount of dark brown for the first border
- fall-themed patterned fabric for the second border,
- light-weight cut-away embroidery stabilizer,
- fabric for the backing and binding,
- batting,
- quilter's ruler,
- rotary cutter,
- iron,
- #12 universal needle,
- #12-#14 quilting needle,
- watersoluble stabilizer for the freestanding leaves.
Cutting:
Out of the fabric for the central part, cut a piece measuring 11 1/2" x 14 1/2", Out of dark brown fabric, cut

Sew the brown 1" x 12 1/2" strips to the upper and lower edges of the central part. |
Sew the patterned 2 1/2" x 15 1/2" strips to the left and right edges of the working piece.
Sew the patterned 2 1/2" x 16 1/2" strips to the lower and upper edges of the working piece. |
Embroidery:
Mark the position of the embroidery on the central part. If you have a printer and embroidery software, print-outs of the designs will be helpful. If you don't, you can cut out rectangles the size of the designs and distribute them on the fabric for convenience. Stabilize the chosen area. Hoop fabric tightly and embroider the designs one by one.
In the upper part of the central part embroider the word WELCOME, using fonts from your embroidery machine.
Embroider several freestanding leaves for decorating the quilt. Rinse the stabilizer and leave the stitch-outs to air dry.
Quilting and Finishing
Now place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.
Pin all layers together. We quilted in a free-motion style all over the quilt. |
Press with heavy steam. Square the quilt. Finish the raw edges with the binding. Sew on the freestanding leaves.
Have fun! |
