Here's a small wall quilt to herald the upcoming Fall season. We used the Autumn Tree design for a commercial hoop (8" x 12").
The finished size of the quilt is about 18" x 20".

- batting,
- quilter's ruler,

Assembly:
Note: seam allowance is 1/4", press every seam immediately after you make it. |
Maple Leaf Block:
For this block we need 16 half-triangle squares. Sew them from the 1 3/4" neutral and multi-colored squares.
Place each neutral square face-to-face with a multi-colored one. You'll have 8 pairs.
With a pencil, draw a diagonal on the top square. Stitch 1/4" from the pencil line on both sides.
Cut along the line. Open the new squares, press the seam towards the dark triangle. Trim the "ears". You need a total of sixteen 1 1/2" half-triangle squares.
Sew 2 half-triangle squares and neutral-colored square into a strip as shown below:
Sew 2 multi-colored squares and 1 half-triangle square into a second strip as shown below:
Sew a neutral-colored square, multi-colored square and half-triangle into the third strip as shown below:
Sew all three rows together in a block as shown below:
Repeat for the remaining squares to get 4 blocks.
Assembly of the Top:
Sew the multi-colored 1 1/2" x 14 1/2" strips to the neutral 2 1/2" x 14 1/2" strips. You should get four new strips.
Sew two of these to the left and right edges of the central piece, colored strip edge towards the central part.
Take the other two strips and sew the leaf blocks to the ends of the borders.
Sew the borders to the upper and lower edges of the working piece.
Embroidery:
Upload the embroidery file Autumn Tree into the machine. Mark the position of the embroidery on the central part.
Stabilize the area. Hoop the fabric tightly and embroider the design.
Quilting and Finishing
Now place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.
Pin all layers together. We quilted in a free-motion style all over the quilt with matching quilting threads.
Press with heavy steam. Square the quilt. Finish the raw edges with the binding. |
Have fun! |
