This eclectic table runner features designs from the Celtic Spiral Set. There are a lot of different quilting elements, but the top is actually quite easy to piece.

You will need :
- embroidery threads in either polyester or rayon; the choice of colors is yours; we used jewel tones
- 2 yards of black fabric for the top, backing and binding,
- scraps of cotton fabrics in colors matching the embroidery,
- light-weight cut-away embroidery stabilizer,
- batting, preferably of black color,
- iron,
- rotary cutter, quiltes ruler, quilting threads (black and of matching the colored scraps hues).

The table runner consists of 3 long strips, 6 embroidered blocks and 12 pieced blocks of 6 types. Each pieced block repeats twice. |
Embroidery
|
On the black fabric, embroider the designs from the Celtic Spiral Set Trim each stitch-out to 5 1/2" x 5 1/2" square.
|
|
Cutting and Assembly of the Blocks
|
Note 1: We give cutting quantities for 1 block. You'll need 2 blocks of each kind. Seam allowance is 1/4". Press every seam immediately after you make it. Try to press towards the darker fabric.
Note 2: For easier cutting, out of black fabric, cut several strips 1 1/2" wide and the length of the width of the fabric. Precut the colored scraps into 1 1/2" wide strips. The longest color strip is 5 1/2".

Block #1
|
For this block, out of black fabric, cut
- 2 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 5 1/2",
- 2 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 3 1/2".
Out of colored scraps, cut 3 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 3 1/2".
|
Sew one 1 1/2" x 3 1/2" black strip to a colored one.
|
|
Sew the remaining 1 1/2" x 3 1/2" black strips between 2 colored strips.
|
|
Sew both units together as shown on the picture below.
|
|
Sew the black 1 1/2" x 5 1/2" strips to the upper and lower edges.
|

Block #2
|
For this block, out of black fabric, cut
- 2 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 5 1/2",
- one strip measuring 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" and
- a square measuring 1 1/2" x 1 1/2".
Out of colored scraps, cut
- a strip measuring 1 1/2" x 5 1/2",
- a strip measuring 1 1/2" x 4 1/2" and
- a strip measuring 1 1/2" x 3 1/2".

Sew the black square to the 1 1/2" x 4 1/2" color strip.
|
|
Sew the black 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" strip to the 1 1/2" x 3 1/2" color strip.
|
|
Assemble the block in the following order: color 5 1/2" strip - black 5 1/2" strip - color strip with black square - black 5 1/2" strip - remaining color-black strip.

Block #3
|
For this block, out of black fabric, cut
- 3 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 5 1/2" and
- 3 squares measuring 1 1/2" x 1 1/2".
Out of colored scraps, cut
- a strip measuring 5 1/2" and
- 2 squares measuring 1 1/2" x 1 1/2".

Sew all 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" squares into a strip alternating black and color squares. Start and finish with the black ones.
|
|
Sew all strips into a block in the following order: black - color strip - black - multi-colored square strip - black.
|

Block #4
|
For this block, out of black fabric, cut
- 2 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 5 1/2",
- 2 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 2 1/2",
- 3 squares measuring 1 1/2" x 1 1/2".
Out of colored scraps, cut
- 2 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 3 1/2" and
- 2 squares measuring 1 1/2" x 1 1/2".

Sew all squares into a strip, alternating color and black squares, start and finish with a black one.
|
|
Sew the 2 1/2" black strips to the 3 1/2" colored strips.
|
|
Assemble all strip into the block as shown on the picture below: color-black strip - black - color-black strip - black - multi-colored square strip.

Block #5
|
For this block, out of black fabric, cut the following strips:
- 2 strips 1 1/2" x 4 1/2",
- 2 strips 1 1/2" x 3 1/2",
- 2 strips 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" and
- 2 squares 1 1/2" x 1 1/2".
Out of colored scraps, cut 5 squares measuring 1 1/2" x 1 1/2".

Sew colored squares to both 4 1/2" black strips to get 2 strips.
|
|
Sew colored squares between a black square and 3 1/2" strip. Make 2 such strips.
|
|
Sew the last colored square between the 2 black 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" strips.
|
|
Assemble the strips into a block as shown:

Block #6
|
For this block, out of black fabric, cut
- 1 strip measuring 1 1/2" x 5 1/2",
- 3 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 2 1/2",
- 1 strip measuring 1 1/2" x 4 1/2",
- 1 strip measuring 1 1/2" x 3 1/2" and
- a 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" square.
Out of colored scraps, cut
- a strip measuring 1 1/2" x 3 1/2" and
- 3 squares measuring 1 1/2" x 1 1/2".

Sew the colored 3 1/2" strip to the black 2 1/2" one.
|
|
Sew a colored square to the 4 1/2" black strip.
|
|
Sew a colored square between 2 black 2 1/2" strips.
|
|
Sew a colored square between the black square and black 3 1/2" strip.
|
|
Assemble the strips into a block as shown:

|
Sashing, Borders and Binding:
|
For the sashing, cut a black strip measuring 3 1/2" x 45". For the borders, cut 2 black strips measuring 4" x 45" and 2 strips measuring 4" x 21"? For the binding, cut 4 strips 2 1/2" wide and the length of the width of the fabric for the binding. Use the remaining fabric for the backing.

Assembly of the Top:
|
Lay out 3 embroidered and 6 pieced blocks in the following order: embroidered block - 2 pieced blocks - embroidered block - 2 pieced blocks - embroidered block - 2 pieced blocks. Feel free to use the pieced blocks in any order you like.

Sew the parts together.
|
|
Make another strip with the remaining blocks in the same order. You do not need to use the pieced blocks in the same way as you used them in the first strip. Feel free to use them in the order you like. |
|
Sew the first strip to the upper edge of the 3" wide black strip.
|
|
Turn the second strip upside down and sew it to the lower edge of the black strip.
|
|
Sew the 4" x 45" black strips to the long edges of the working piece.
|
|
Sew the 4" x 21" strips to the short ends of the working piece.
|
|
Quilting and Finishing:
|
Now place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.
Pin all layers together.
We quilted in a free-motion style all over the wall quilt.

|
Press with heavy steam. Square the quilt. Finish the raw edges with the binding. |
|
