Tree of Love Wall Quilt
This small quilt is devoted to Valentine's Day. It features the design Tree of Love (for 10" x 12" hoop), designs from the Valentine Heart Set (the smaller version of the patterns) and the freestanding lace hearts from the Heart Earring Set.

The finished size of the quilt is about 19" x 20", but feel free to adjust the size as you like.

You will need :
  • embroidery threads, either rayon or polyester (we chose several shades of pink and red),
  • embroidery cotton thread (red) for the freestanding hearts,
  • light-weight cut-away stabilizer,
  • water-soluble mesh for the freestanding designs,
  • about 1/2 yard of white fabric,
  • small amount of red fabric for the sashing and binding,
  • fabric for the backing,
  • 2 strips of waste fabric about 5" wide and 20" long
  • batting,
  • #12 universal sewing and quilting needles,
  • quilting threads of matching colors,
  • rotary cutter,
  • quilter's ruler,
  • iron.
Cutting:
Out of white fabric, cut
  • 1 piece measuring 14 1/2" x 15",
  • 1 piece measuring 6 1/2"x 15" and
  • 1 piece measuring 21 1/4" x 4 1/2".
Out of red fabric, cut
  • 1 strip measuring 1 1/4" x 15",
  • 1 strip measuring 1 1/4" x 21 1/4" and
  • 2 strips 2 1/2" wide and the length of the width of the fabric (40"-42")
Assembly of the Top:
Note: seam allowance is 1/4", press every seam immediately after you make it.
Sew the 1 1/4" x 15" red strip to the left edge of the 15" x 14 1/2" white piece.
Sew the 6 1/2" x 15" white strip to the left edge of the red strip.
Sew the 1 1/4" x 21 1/4" red strip to the lower edge of the working piece.
Sew the 4 1/2" x 21 1/4" white strip to the lower edge of the red strip.
Embroidery:
We recommend to start with the Tree of Love design in the upper right white part.
Use light-weight cut-away stabilizer.
Baste a waste strip of fabric to the lower and left edges of the top. These strips will allow you to hoop the fabric better. Embroider the designs from the Valentine Heart Set on the left and lower white strips.

Then embroider the freestanding designs from the Heart Earring Set. Please note that for these designs you need water-soluble mesh and cotton embroidery thread. Alternatively, you can embroider these designs right on fabric. In this case rayon or polyester thread and cut-away stablizer are needed.
If you make the freestanding embroidery, wash away the stabilizer and leave the stitch-outs air dry.
After you are done with embroidery, press the working piece.
Quilting and Finishing:
Now place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.

Pin all layers together with 1" pins and start quilting. We quilted with a free motion style all over the quilt.
After the quilting is finished, press the work with heavy steam and square the work -- all corners should be 90 degrees and opposite sides should be of the same length
Finish the raw edges with the binding.
Machine-stitch the freestanding hearts in places you want them to be.

Enjoy!
