This table runner features a rather simple design and is easy to piece. We think this really complements the bold applique embroidery.
We used the designs from the Art Nouveau Rose Applique Set for the large hoop (5" x 7").
The finished size of the table runner is 18" x 36".
You can choose to make it in the same colors as we did, or make the roses red, gold, etc. Change the fabric accordingly.
You will need :
- embroidery threads, either polyester or rayon; the choice of colors is yours,
- about 1/2 yard of fabric of neutral color for the background,
- about 1/4 yard of green fabric for the borders and binding,
- about 1/4 yard of pink (or red, or gold) fabric for the applique and borders,
- small amount of black fabric,
- light-weight cut-away embroidery stabilizer,
- fabric for the backing,
- batting,
- applique scissors,
- iron.
Note: We recommend to use green and black colors in the embroidery. Select fabric so that they match the embroidery threads, or vice versa. |
Cutting:
Out of the neutral, background fabric, cut
- 3 pieces measuring 15 1.2" x 8 1/2" each,
- 3 pieces measuring 12 1/2" x 8 1/2" each,
- 3 pieces measuirng 1 1/2" x 8 1/2" each, and
- 3 pieces measuring 3 1/2" x 8 1/2" each.
Out of pink fabric, cut 6 strips measuring 2" x 8 1/2" each. Use the remaining fabric for the applique.
Out of black fabric, cut 6 strips measuring 1" x 8 1/2" each.
Out of green fabric, cut 6 strips measuring 2 1/2" x 8 1/2" each. Use the remaining fabric for the binding. |
Assembly:
Note: Seam allowance is 1/4", press every seam immediately after you make it. |
Sew the pink, black and green strips into 6 units as shown:
Sew the neutral 1 1/2" x 8 1/2" strips to the pink side of 3 units.
Sew the neutral 3 1/2" x 8 1/2" strips to the pink side of the remaining 3 units. |
Sew the neutral 14 1/2" x 8 1/2" strips to the green side of the first 3 units.
Sew the neutral 12 1/2" x 8 1/2" strips to the green side of the remaining 3 units. |
Now sew the pieces together, alternating the two styles of strip.
Embroidery:
Decide on the position of the roses on the top. Upload the embroidery files into the machine and embroider them one by one, following the included instructions. |
Quilting and Finishing: |
Now place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.
Pin all layers together. We quilted in a free-motion style all over the table runner. |
Press with heavy steam. Square the quilt. Finish the raw edges with the binding. |
