For this simple red-and-white Christmas quilt we used one-color designs from the Christmas Ornament Set and Pine Branches Set. You can also use Christmas Ornament Set II instead of the first one. The pine branches designs are for the large hoop (5" x 7"). The ornaments are available in different sizes, but we used the designs for the small hoop (4" x 4").
The finished size of the quilt is about 24" x 24", but it's easy to change the size to your needs.

You will need :
- red embroidery thread, either polyester or rayon,
- a piece of white fabric for the central part,
- Christmas themed patterned red fabric for the borders and binding (we used red fabric with silver snowflakes), about 3/4 yard,
- light-weight cut-away embroidery stabilizer,
- batting and backing,
- quilting thread (white, red, silver)
- #14-16 needles (depending on the batting you use),
- iron,
- rotary cutter or scissors,
- quilter's ruler,
- chalk pencil (if using scissors).
Cutting:
Out of white fabric, cut a square measuring 18 1/2" x 18 1/2". Out of fabric for the borders, cut
- 2 strips measuring 3 1/2" x 18 1/2" and
- 2 strips measuring 3 1/2" x 24 1/2".
Assembly of the Top: |
Note: seam allowance 1/4", press every seam immediately after you make it. |
Sew the 18 1/2"-long strips to the upper and lower edges of the central part, then sew the 24 1/2"-long strips to the left and right edges of the central part.
Embroidery:
Stabilize the central part of the quilt with iron-on cut-away embroidery stabilizer. Hoop tightly.
Upload the files from the Pine Branches Set to your embroidery machine.
Embroider the files one by one along the upper border of the quilt. The designs can slightly overlap each other.
Choose 4-5 designs from the Christmas Ornament Set or Christmas Ornament Set II and upload the files to the machine. Embroider the files one by one under the branches.
Quilting and Finishing:
Now place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.
Pin all layers together.
We quilted in a free-motion style all over the central part of the quilt with white thread and all over the borders with silver thread.
In a free-motion style "draw" the strings for the ornaments with red thread.
Press with heavy steam. Square the quilt. Finish the raw edges with the binding. |
Have fun!
