Follow this step-by-step guide to create this charming Love in Fall Art Quilt. The finished size of the quilt is about 21 1/2" x 24".
For this small wall quilt, we used the design Love in Fall and the designs from the Autumn Gusts Set. All designs are for the large hoop (5" x7").

You will need :
- embroidery thread, either polyester or rayon,
- a fat quarter of light gray fabric for the central part,
- small amount of black fabric for the first border,
- about 1 yard of patterned dark gray fabric for the second border, binding and backing (we chose a pattern that looks like fog or clouds) ,
- light-weight cut-away embroidery stabilizer,
- batting,
- iron,
- (optional) additional embellishments, such as small beads, rhinestones or buttons.
Cutting:
The quilt is very simple to put together, so it's very easy to adjust its size if you need to.
Out of light gray fabric, cut a piece measuring 13 1/2" x 16 1/2". Out of the black fabric, cut
- 2 strips measuring 1 1/4" x 13 1/2" and
- 2 strips measuring 1 1/4" x 18".
Out of dark gray fabric, cut
- 1 strip measuring 4" x 18",
- 1 strip measuring 4" x 18 1/2",
- 1 strip measuring 4" x 21 1/2", and
- 1 strip measuring 4" x 22".
Use the remaining dark gray fabric for the backing and binding.
Assembly:
Note: seam allowance 1/4", press every seam immediately after you make it. |
Sew the black 1 1/4" x 13 1/4" strips to the upper and lower edges of the central part.
Sew the black 1 1/4" x 18" strips to the left and right edges of the central part.
Sew the 4" x 18" dark gray strip to the left edge of the working piece.
Sew the 4" x 18 1/2" strip to the bottom edge of the working piece.
Sew the 4" x 21 1/2" strip to the right edge of the working piece.
Sew the 4" x 22" strip to the upper edge of the working piece.
Embroidery:
Choose the positions of the designs on the quilt. You can use either print-outs or test stitch-outs of the designs.
Upload the files Love in Fall and Autumn Gusts Set into your embroidery machine. Working with one design at a time, stabilize its location with light-weight cut-away stabilizer and embroider.
Quilting and Finishing:
Now place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.
Pin all layers together. We quilted in a free-motion style all over the working piece. |
Press with heavy steam. Square the quilt. Finish the raw edges with the binding. |
Have fun!
