For this elegant table runner, we made borders cut out of border stripe fabric. There is a large selection of border fabrics both on the Internet and local quilting shops. You can choose any border color you like and then pick the colors of the solid fabric and embroidery based on it.
We used dark blue borders and did the embroidery in dark blue. We used the designs from the One Color Chicken Set for the large hoop (5" x 7").
The finished size of the quilt is about 19 1/2" x 40", but feel free to adjust the size as you like.

Cutting: |
For the central part with embroidery, you'll need a strip measuring 10 1/2" x 31 1/2".
For the borders, cut out 3 stripes. The width of the strips will be different (depends on your fabric). The total length should be 1 1/2 yard. Cut the third strip in half for the short borders. |
Embroidery:
Fold the white fabric in half lengthwise and lightly press the folded line to mark the central line/axis. When hooping, use the hoop grid and align the center of the hoop with this creased line. That way, all your designs will be lined up.
Choose 4-5 designs from the One Color Chicken Set and upload the files to your embroidery machine. Mark the position of each design on the fabric.
Stabilize the fabric for each design one at a time with light-weight cut-away stabilizer. Embroider the designs, using the thread color of your choice.
Cut away the stabilizer around the embroidery. Press.
Assembly of the Top: |
Note: Seam allowance is 1/4". Press a seam immediately after you made it. |
Mark the center of each edge of the embroidered piece. |
Place the embroidered strip on the table, face up. Working with one border at a time, position each of the shorter borders on each of the shorter edges of the embroidered strip, face down. Align the edges and the centers. Pin. |
Sew the border and the embroidered strip together, starting and finishing stitching 1/4" from the top and bottom edges. |
In the same way, attach the longer strips. |
To make mitered corners, fold one of the border strips over the other, to make an angle, align the corners. |
When the borders are aligned, press the line. |
Pin the border strips together. Please note that the edges of both strips should be aligned. |
Top-stitch along the creased line. Trim the seam (seam allowance at the corner should be 1/2"). Unfold. |
Unfold and press the seam first from the back. Then from the front. |
Repeat for the other 3 corners of the quilt. |
Quilting and Finishing: |
Now place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.
Pin all layers together. We quilted in a free-motion style all over the table runner. |
Press with heavy steam. Square the quilt. Finish the raw edges with the binding. |
Enjoy! |
