Autumn Girl Art Quilt
This small, charming wall quilt is quick to make. It features the designs Autumn Girl and FSL Autumn Leaves.

The finished size of the quilt is about 18" x 22".

You will need :
  • embroidery threads either polyester or rayon,
  • a piece of light cream fabric for the central part with embroidery,
  • 9 scraps of patterned fabrics in Autumn colors,
  • light- to medium-weight cut-away embroidery stabilizer,
  • water-soluble stabilizer for the freestanding leaves if you are going to use them,
  • batting,
  • backing,
  • binding,
  • iron,
  • quilter's ruler and rotary cutter,
  • quilting threads,
  • (optional) additional autumn-themed embellishments, such as small buttons, beads or rhinestones.
NOTE: The construction of the quilt is log-cabin block.
Cutting:
Out of light cream fabric, cut a piece measuring 10 1/2" x 12 1/2".

Out of patterned fabrics, cut the following strips, each one in a different fabric:
  • 2 1/2" x 10 1/2",
  • 2 1/2" x 12 1/2",
  • two of 2 1/2" x 14 1/2",
  • two of 2 1/2" x 16 1/2",
  • two of 2 1/2" x 18 1/2",
  • 2 1/2" x 20 1/2"
Assembly:
Note: seam allowance 1/4", press every seam immediately after you make it.
Sew the 2 1/2" x 10 1/2" strip to the upper edge of the central part.

Sew the second strip to the right edge.

Sew the third strip to the bottom edge.

Sew the fourth strip to the left edge.

Sew the fifth strip to the upper edge.

Sew the sixth strip to the right edge.

Sew the seventh strip to the bottom edge.

Sew the eighth strip to the left edge.

Sew the ninth strip to the bottom edge.

Embroidery
Stabilize the central part with cut-away embroidery stabilizer. Hoop and tighten the hoop. Upload the file of Autumn Girl into the machine. Embroider the design.

Quilting and Finshing
Now place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.

Pin all layers together. We quilted in a free motion style. First we quilted around the embroidery with matching thread, then through the embroidery, inside the leaves and curls with gold metallic thread.
Then we quilted the borders in a free-motion style.
Press with heavy steam. Square the quilt. Finish the raw edges with the binding.

Now embellish the quilt as you like with buttons, ornaments and FSL leaves.
