Coffee Themed Mini Quilts
These small Coffee-themed quilts are perfect for the coffee lovers in your life!

For these small quilts we used designs from the Coffee Quotes and the designs Coffee Cup and Coffee Cup II. We used the Small Hoop version of the Coffee Cup designs.

The finished size of the pieced quilt is about 18" x 19 1/2". The whole cloth quilt is about 16 1/2" x 13 1/2". However, feel free to adjust the size as you like.

You will need:
  • embroidery threads (according to the JPG color cards for the cup designs; you can choose your own colors for the quotes),
  • light-weight cut-away stabilizer,
  • coffee patterned/colored fabrics and cream-colored fabric for the borders and binding, (we used fabrics with coffee beans and coffee names),
  • fabric for the backing,
  • batting,
  • #12 universal sewing and quilting needles,
  • quilting threads of matching colors,
  • rotary cutter,
  • quilter's ruler,
  • iron.
"Coffee Time is Any Time" Wall Quilt
Note: Seam allowance is 1/4", press every seam immediately after you make it.
Out of dark coffee-colored or coffee-patterned fabric, cut a piece measuring 11 1/2" x 13".

Out of cream colored fabric, cut
  • 2 strips measuring 1 1/4" x 11 1/2" and
  • 2 strips measuring 1 1/4" x 14 1/2".
Also cut 2 strips 2 1/2" wide and the length of the width of the fabric for the binding.

Out of the fabric with coffee names , cut
  • 2 strips measuring 3 1/4" x 13" and
  • 2 strips measuring 3 1/2" x 20" for the borders.
Sew the 1 1/4" x 11 1/2" cream strips to the upper and lower edges of the central piece (11 1/2" x 13").

Sew the 1 1/4" x 14 1/2" cream strips to the left and right edges of the central part.
Coffee Quilts

Sew the 3 1/4" x 13" borders to the upper and lower edges of the working piece. Sew the 3 1/2" x 20" to the left and right edges of the working piece.
Coffee Quilts
Embroidery:
We recommend to start with the cup embroidery.

With the help of the quilter's ruler find the center of the top: position the ruler across the central part, diagonally, from one corner to another, lightly draw the diagonal in the center. Now position the ruler to connect the other two corners and draw a diagonal in the center. You'll get a small cross in the middle of the top.
Stabilize the center of the top with light-weight cut-away stabilizer. Hoop the top so that the center of the frame's grid coincides with the drawn cross. Hoop the fabric tightly.

Upload the file of the Coffee Cup into the machine and embroider it.

Then re-hoop, upload the files with a coffee quote you like most and embroider the words over and under the cup. We used the "curved" version of the saying.
After you are done with embroidery, press the working piece.
"Wake Up and Smell Coffee" Quilt
This small piece is a wholecloth quilt. You can use it as a wall sign or as a place mat.

We embroidered the Coffee Cup II first, then embroidered the words, their "straight" version, to the right of the cup.
Quilting and Finishing:
Now place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.

Pin all layers together with 1" pins and start quilting. We quilted with a free motion meandering pattern all over the quilts.
After the quilting is finished, press the work with heavy steam and square the work -- all corners should be 90 degrees and opposite sides should be of the same length.
Finish the raw edges with the binding.

Enjoy!
