This charming quilt features designs from the Funny Sheep Applique Set for the large hoop. We picked sheep colors - white and brown - and chose frayed edges for the blocks of the quilt top to give it a fuzzy look and feel.
The quilt is warm, cozy and simple to make. It would make a great baby shower gift.
The finished size of the quilt is about 35" x 35".

Cutting: |
Out of the dark solid fabric, cut 8 squares measuring 11.5" x 11.5". Out of dark patterned fabric, cut 32 squares measuring 6" x 6". Out of light patterned fabric, cut 34 squares measuring 6" x 6". Use the remaining light fabric for the binding. |
Embroidery:
Stabilize the center of one of the 11" x 11" squares with light-weight cut-away stabilizer. Hoop it tightly.
Upload the first embroidery file from the Funny Sheep Applique Set into the machine and embroider it according to the instructions.
Embroider the remaining 3 designs.

Sewing the Blocks:
Place the 11" x 11" squares without the embroidery on the table, face down. Cover them with the embroidered squares, face up. Align the edges.
On your sewing machine, quilt around the applique in a free motion style. Also make straight diagonal lines from the corners of the square up to the embroidery.
Place all dark patterns squares in pairs, back side to back side. You'll get 16 pairs. Repeat with the light patterned squares, to get 17 pairs.
Quilt each of these squares with an X - straight diagonal lines from corner to corner.
Assembly of the Quilt:
When assembling the quilt, sew the blocks into rows first, then sew the rows together.
Pin two small blocks back to back and stitch down one side, 1/2" from the edge. Press the seam allowances open. The seam allowances will be on the top the quilt and will be used to create the ragged-edge effect. |
Sew two rows out of the smaller blocks in the following order: light - dark - light - dark - light - dark - light
Sew one row out of small blocks in the following order: dark - light - dark - light - dark - light - dark
Sew the remaining small blocks into 6 two-color pairs.
Sew a row with the large blocks and 2-color pairs in the following order: pair with dark block at top - large block with embroidery - pair with light block at top - large block with embroidery - strip with dark block at top. |
Sew the second row with large blocks and 2-color pairs in the same order, but with the pairs flipped. |
The open seams should always be on top! Follow the layout below to sew the rows together:
- small block row starting and ending with a light block
- the first row with the large blocks
- small block row starting and ending with a dark block
- the second row with the large blocks
- small block row starting and ending with a light block.

Finish the raw edges with the binding. |
Fringing the Quilt: |
Clip the 1/2" seam allowance on each seam of the quilt every 1/4", to make a fringe. DO NOT clip through the seam |
Washing and Drying: |
Now the quilt is ready for washing and drying. We recommend to choose a gentle cycle for items with embroidery and a low temperature in your dryer. |
Enjoy! |
