Thanksgiving Dinner Quilted Table Set

This charming table set consists of a table runner and 4 place mats.

We used applique designs from the Turkey Applique Set for the mega and large hoops, Pumpkin Applique for the large hoop, Leaf AppliqueSet I and Leaf Applique Set III.

The finished size of the table runner is about 18" x 39" and of each place mat - 13" x 16".

Table Runner:

These are instructions for the table runner. The place mats will be described soon.

You will need

embroidery thread (either polyester or rayon),
medium-weight cut-away stabilizer,
fabrics of bright autumn colors for the applique,
fabrics of muted autumn colors: neutral colored fabrics for the background, olive green and light brown for the sashing and first border, patterned fabric for the outer border, brown for the binding;
backing and batting,
sewing and quilting threads.

Cutting:

Out of neutral-colored fabrics for the background, cut

12 squares measuring 5" x 5", (if you are going to make the place mats as well, you'll need 4 such squares for each place mat)
alternatively, if you prefer to do less sewing, you can cut 3 squares measuring 9 1/2" x 9 1/2".

Out of the olive green and light brown fabric each, cut

4 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 9 1/2",
2 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 35 1/2",

Out of patterned fabric, cut

2 strips measuring 3" x 35 1/2" and
2 strips measuring 3" x 19 1/2" for the outer border.

Out of brown fabric cut 3 strips measuring 2 1/2" and the length of the width of the fabric for the binding.

Assembly of the Background Blocks:

Note: seam allowance is 1/4". Press every seam immediately after you make it.

Take the 5" x 5" squares and sew them in 6 pairs.

Sew the pairs into 3 squares.

Making the Sashing:

Sew the olive green and light brown strips in pairs. You'll have 4 pairs 9 1/2" long and 2 pairs 35 1/2" long.

Assembly of the Block Row:

Sew together the background blocks and green-brown sashing strips to form a long strip.

Sew the green-brown 35 1/2" long strips to the long edges of the working piece.

Adding the Borders:

Sew the 3" x 35 1/2" patterned borders to the long edges of the working piece.

Sew the 3" x 19 1/2" patterned borders to the short edges of the working piece.

Embroidery:

Upload the files from the Turkey Applique, Pumpkin Applique, Leaf Applique Set I, and Leaf Applique Set II into your machine and embroider them in any order on the neutral colored squares, beforehand stabilizing the blocks with medium-weight cut-away stabilizer. Follow the instructions on how to embroider each design.

Quilting and Finishing:

Now place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.

Pin all three layers together with 1" pins and start quilting. We quilted around the embroidery and all over the table runner in a freemotion style.

After the quilting is finished, press the work with heavy steam and square the work -- all corners should be 90 degrees and opposite sides should be of the same length.

Finish the raw edges with the binding.
