Quilted Table Mats with Geranium Embroidery

These table mats feature a floral shape that makes them unique. They are both practical and a beautiful decoration for your home.

The embroidery designs used in this project are from the Geranium Section of our catalog. However, other Floral designs work well too. The designs used are for the large (5" x 7") hoop.

The finished size of each mat is about 13" in diameter.

You will need

  • embroidery thread (either polyester or rayon)
  • medium-weight cut-away stabilizer,
  • light-weight iron-on stabilizer or sewing interfacing,
  • light-colored cotton fabric for the embroidered central part (about 14" x 14" for each mat),
  • fabric for the "frame", about 18" x 18" per mat,
  • fabric for the backing, about 18" x 18" per mat (we used the same fabric for the frame and for the backing),
  • batting,
  • quilting threads to match the colors of the fabrics,
  • graphic pencil,
  • scissors,
  • all-purpose glue or scotch tape
  • fabric glue (optional).

Emboridery

Stabilize the fabric for the central part with medium-weight cut-away stabilizer for embroidery. Print out the color card. Select embroidery threads according to the color card. Upload the design into the machine and embroider it.

Set the stitch-out aside.

Sewing the Quilt / Table Topper

Step One: Download the file with the template. To open and print the template, which is a PDF file, you will need Adobe Reader or a similar program. The program is free to download and install.

Step Two: Print out the template parts, cut them out and glue the parts together for the template. You can use paper glue or tape for this, or you can trace the parts of the template onto a large sheet of cardstock and cut it out.

Step Three: Adhere the fabric for the top to the iron-on cut-away stabilizer or interfacing.

Lay the piece out with the stabilizer facing up. Position your template over the stabilizer and trace the template with a pencil.

Step Four: With a pair of sharp scissors, cut out the central circle 1/2" from the inner line.

Cut notches into the seam allowance from the edge to the inner line.

Step Five: Fold the notched fabric back, press. Optional: using fabric glue, adhere the notches to the stabilizer. Leave to dry.
