Blocks:
To make the checkerboard block, sew the white and blue strips together. Press the seam to the white strip. |
Subcut the blue-and-white strips into 8 strips 2 1/2" wide. |
Sew the strips into four longer strips. Sew the squares into a block. |
To make the nine-patch block, sew the 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" white strips to the left and right edges of the 4 1/2" x 4 1/2" blue square. |
Using 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" blue squares and 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" white strips, make 2 strips. |
Sew them to the upper and lower edges of the central working piece. |
Assembly:
Sew the first 8 1/2" x 8 1/2" white square to the right edge of the checkerboard block. |
Sew the other 8 1/2" x 8 1/2" white square to the left edge of the nine-patch block. |
Sew the rows together. |
Sew the red 3" x 16 1/2" to the left and right edges of the working piece. |
Sew the 3" x 3" squares to the ends of the remaining red 3" x 16 1/2" strips. |
Sew these borders to the upper and lower edges of the quilt. |
Embroidery:
Stabilize the fabric with your favorite cut-away or tear-away stabilizer. On the checkerboard block we embroidered several hearts from the FSL Battenberg Heart Earrings Set. You can embroider the designs right on the fabric, as we did, or as freestanding lace and sew them on later, after quilting. The buttons were sewn on after quilting. |
In the upper right square we embroidered the Doves design. |
In the lower left square we embroidered the Heart Applique. |
In the lower right block we embroidered the heart from the FSL Battenberg Heart and Birds Set. Again, you can embroider the design right on the fabric, as we did, or as a freestanding design and sew it on the block after quilting. |
Quilting and Finishing:
Now place the backing/lining on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it. Pin all three layers together with 1" pins. We quilted around the embroidery and all over the top in a free-motion style. Remove the pins while quilting.
Press the work with heavy steam and square the work -- all corners should be 90 degrees and opposite sides should be of the same length.
Finish the raw edges with binding.
Sew the buttons to the blue squares. |
We hope you liked our idea. Enjoy!
Happy Stitching!
