The designs from the Redwork Basket Set can be used to make mini quilts for many happy occasions. The quilts are easy and quick to make and the results are stunning! Your giftee will love the quilt. |
For each quilt you will need scraps of different colored fabrics. You will also need batting and the fabric for backing, binding and small embellishments (optional). For embroidery, you will need light-weight, cut-away stabilizer and embroidery threads. Instead of batting and stabilizer you can use polyester craft felt. |
You will also need fabric coloring supplies: markers, pencils and ink blocks all work. |

Happy Mother's Day Quilt
The finished size of this quilt is 10" x 11". It features the basket with roses embroidery design. 2 fabrics are used - pale pink and bright green batiks. |
Out of pink batik, cut a piece measuring 8" x 11". Out of green batik cut a strip measuring 2 1/2" x 11". Sew the green strip to the left edge of the pink strip. You can make it a curved line. For this, place the pink fabric on the cutting mat, face up. Position the green strip, face up, on the left side. Overlap both fabrics 1 inch. With a rotary cutter (or a pair of sharp scissors), cut a curve through both fabrics. Sew the both pieces together.
Spread the top over a piece of polyester craft felt and make the embroidery. We embroidered the basket with green thread. Add the lettering. We just wrote Happy Mother's Day! You can embroider the name of the giftee.
Color the embroidery and leave to air dry.

Mini Quilt for a Knitting Friend
The finished size of the quilt is 10" x 11". Two batiks - light yellow and dark burgundy are used. For the central part, out of pale yellow batik, cut a strip measuring 6" x 11". For the borders cut 2 strips measuring 2 1/2" x 11". Sew the dark strips to the left and right sides of the central part.
Spread the working piece on a piece of craft felt. Embroider the basket with yarn and needles. We chose the embroidery thread to match the color of the border. Add the lettering. We wrote "Life's short... knit fast".
We did not color this quilt with fabric paints.

Quilting and Finishing:
On a piece of paper, draw a rectangle measuring 7" x 15". From the left lower corner, measure 5" to each side and place a mark. Divide the corner into 2 and draw a line. Measure 2" along this line and place a mark. Now connect all 3 marks with a curved line. Cut the excess paper along this curved line.
Fold the rectangle in half widthwise and cut away the upper corner using the curved line as a template.
Finish the raw edges with binding. We cut the binding from the fabric for the borders.
Sew on any 3D embellishments. Your quilts are ready. |
Enjoy!
