A Modern Christmas Quilted Table Set

This original table set consists of a table runner and 4 place mats. The bright colors and dark background give it a fashionable contemporary look. At the same time, it's easy to piece, and the applique embroidery is a cinch to do. We used the applique snowlakes from 2 sets:
Snowflake Applique Set (we used both the small and large snowlakes) and Snowflake Applique for Sheer Fabrics.

The finished size of the table runner is about 17" x 61"; each place mat is 13" x 19".

You will need 2 yards of black fabric with a snowflake pattern, a fat quarter each of green, blue, red and yellow fabric to match the color of the snowflakes.

You will also need backing, batting and binding (we used red binding because we thought this went best with the Christmas theme).

For embroidery you will need medium-weight cut-away stabilizer and embroidery threads.

Cutting:

For the table runner:
Out of snowflake-patterned fabric, cut 2 rectangles measuring 11 1/2" x 17 1/2" and 3 rectangles measuring 9 1/2" x 17 1/2.
Out of the fat quarters cut 4 strips, one of each color, measuring 3 1/2" x 17 1/2".

For the table mats:
Out of snowflake patterned fabric, cut 4 rectangles measuring 13" x 16 1/2" . Out of colored fat quarters, cut 4 strips, one of each color, measuring 3 1/2" x 13".

Assembly:

Table Runner:

On your working table, arrange all pieces in the following order:
11 1/2" x 17 1/2" piece - a colored strip - 9 1/2" x 17 1/2" piece - a colored strip - 9 1/2" x 17 1/2" piece - a colored strip - 9 1/2" x 17 1/2" piece - a colored strip - 11 1/2" x 17 1/2" piece.

Sew the pieces together. Seam allowance is 1/4".

Place Mats:

Take the 13" x 16 1/2" patterned fabric pieces and 3 1/2" x 13" color strips. Sew a color strip to the right edge of each piece.

With a rotary cutter and a ruler, cut away a part of the patterned fabric piece. Place it on the right edge of the colored strip. Sew them together. The width of the cut fabric varies from mat to mat.

Embroidery:

Determine the position of the snowflakes on the table runner and the mats. Stabilize the fabric and embroider the snowflakes from Snowflake Applique Set and Snowflake Applique for Sheer Fabrics.
For applique use the fat-quarter left-overs.
Cut away the excess stabilizer.

Quilting:

Now place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with the batting. Spread your top over it.

Pin all 3 layers together with 1" pins. We quilted around the embroidery and all over therunner and mats in a free-motion style. Remove the pins while quilting.

When you are finished, press with heavy steam and trim the mats to 13" x 19".
Finish with binding.

Trim the edges of the table runner. Find the center of the short edges. Mark with pins. Measure 3" from the colored strip on each of the long sides.

Position the ruler so that it connects the mark on the short edge and the mark on the lond edge. Cut away the corner. Repeat with the other corners

Finish the raw edges with the binding.
