This autumn-themed table set consists of a charming table-runner and 4 place mats. The designs used for the set are Wheat Ears, Corn (for a 5" x 7" hoop) and the Sunflower Set.
The finished size of the table topper is about 34" x 34". The finished size of each place mat is 13" x 18".
For one table topper and 4 place mats you will need about 1 yard of autumn-themed cotton fabric and 4 yards of black fabric. We used the black fabric for the top, backing and binding. You will also need batting.
For the table topper, out of black fabric cut
For one mat,

Take the 10 1/2" x 10 1/2" black square. Find the center of each of the four sides and mark with pins.
Take the 3 1/2" x 18" strips. Fold them in half widthwise, aligh the edges, lightly press to mark the center.
Working the the black square and one strip at a time, position the first strip over the edge of the square, face to face. Align the marked points of each piece. Pin the pieces together.
Topstitch in place with seam allowance 1/4", start and finish 1/4" from each corner of the square. The strip extends past both sides of the square.
In the same way sew the remaining strips to all sides of the square. Start and stop 1/4" from each corner. Press all seams to the borders.
Miter: Fold the square along the diagonal, face inwards. Align the edges of the borders. Align the edges of the square.
Place your quilter's ruler on the working piece, align the edge of the ruler with the folded line of the square and the 45° angle mark with the top of the border. Draw a line along the edge of the ruler from the corner of the square along the borders at a 45° angle. Pin the borders together. Topstitch along the drawn line.
Cut away the excess fabric with a seam allowance of about 1/2".
Unfold and press the seam open.
Repeat for the remaining corners.
Take the 12 1/2" x 12 1/2" squares and cut them in half along the diagonal to get 4 triangles.
Sew each triangle to the working piece.
Take the 5 1/2" x 36" strips and sew them to the working piece, making mitered corners as described above.
Stabilize the fabric with your favorite cut-away or tear away stabilizer. Please note that when embroidering on dark fabric, a light-colored topping fabric or stabilizer is recommended.
In the center, we embroidered 2 sunflower designs from the Sunflower Set.
In one of the corners, we embroidered the design Corn for a 5" x 7" (130 x 180mm) hoop.
The remaining 3 corners are also filled with sunflowers.
Now place the backing/lining on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.
Pin all three layers together with 1" pins. We quilted around the embroidery and all over the quilt in a free-motion style. Remove the pins while quilting.
Press the work with heavy steam and square the work -- all corners should be 90 degrees and opposite sides should be of the same length.
Finish the raw edges with binding.
The place mats are very easy to make. Take the 3 1/2" x 13" strip and the black rectangle measuring 13" x 15 1/2" . Sew the strip to the left edge of the rectangle.
Embroider wheat ears on the black part.
Position the 14" x 19" black rectangle on the table face down, cover with the batting, and cover with the top, face up. Pin all 3 layers together. Quilt.
Finish the raw edges with the binding. That's it.
