This small, charming, 16" x 16" wall quilt makes a great Valentine's Day gift to a special someone.
The quilt features the Valentine Roses embroidery in the central part.
You will need about 1/2 yard of white or light cream fabric, 1/2 yard of pink fabric, strips of pale blue fabric. You will also need fabric for backing, and low-loft batting, each measuring about...
For embroidery we used embroidery polyester threads.
Out of white fabric, cut 1 square measuring 8" x 8" (for the central part) ;
2 strips 1 7/8" wide and the length of the width of the fabric, subcut into 48 squares measuring 1 7/8" x 1 7/8" (for the blocks),
1 strip 1 1/2" wide and the length of the width of the fabric,
subcut into 24 squares measuring 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" (for the blocks);
2 strips 2 1/2" long and the length of the width of the fabric (for binding).
Out of bright pink fabric, cut 12 strips 1 7/8" wide and the length of the width of the fabric, subcut into 48 squares measuring 1 7/8" x 1 7/8" (for the blocks),
1 strip 1 1/2" wide and the length of the width of the fabric,
subcut into 24 squares measuring 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" (for the blocks).
Out of pale blue fabric cut 2 strips measuring 1" x 8" and 2 strips measuring 1" x 9".
Place white and pink 1 7/8" squares together face to face. You'll get 48 pairs. With a lead mechanical pencil, draw a diagonal on the lighter square. Stitch scant 1/4" from the pencil line on both sides.
Cut along the line. Open the new squares. Press the seam towards the green. Trim the ears. Repeat for all the pairs. You should get 96 two-color squares, measuring 1 1/2" x 1 1/2".
Arrange the two-color squares, the white and the pink squares in rows as shown on the picture:
Sew the squares in the rows. Then, sew the rows together into a block. You will need 12 such blocks.
Sew the light blue 1" x 8" strips to the upper and lower edges of the white 8" x 8" square.
Sew the light blue 1" x 9" strips to the right and left edges of the working piece.
Sew 2 heart blocks together to get a strip. Sew another strip like this.
Sew the strips to the upper and lower edges of the central piece.
Sew four heart blocks to get the left and right borders. Sew them to the left and right edges of the working piece.
Stabilize the central part of the white blocks with iron-on cut-away stabilizer. Make the embroidery. Cut away the excess stabilizer.
You can also use polyester craft felt instead of the stabilizer. In this case we recommend to baste the quilt top to the felt in the ditch along the colored borders. After the embroidery is finished, rip the baste and cut away the excess felt around the embroidery.
We embroidered Valentine Roses.
Now place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.
Pin all three layers together with 1" pins and start quilting. We quilted along the lines of the embroidery and made stippling all over the wall hanging.
After the quilting is finished, press the work with heavy steam and square the work -- all corners should be 90 degrees and opposite sides should be of the same length.
Finish the raw edges with the binding.
