The finished size of the table runner is 27.5 x 50.5". The finished size of each place mat is 14" x 21". We used about 2 yards of bright patchwork-patterned cotton fabric for the tops, about 52" of matching fabric with a border design for the borders of the runner, about 2 yards of cotton batting and 2 yards of solid blue fabric for the backing. You will also need binding and light-colored cotton fabric for embroidery.
On a piece of light-colored fabric make the embroidery of the Nesting Dolls. When the embroidery is ready, cut away the excess fabric, to get a rectangle of 17 1/2" x 8 1/2".
Out of patterned fabric cut the pieces and assemble according to the diagram. Note that all measurements are given without seam allowance.
On an even surface, place the backing, cover it with batting and cover with the embroidered top. Pin all three layers together and then quilt. We quilted with stippling around the embroidery and with the straight stitch along the "patches" of the fabric.
Press with heavy steam. Square all corners and even the edges. Finish the raw edges with binding.
The finished size of the place mat is 14" x 21". Just cut out a piece of patterned fabric of about 15" x 22", a piece of batting of about 16" x 23" and a piece of backing of about 16 x 23". Make a sandwich with these. Quilt it. Press with heavy steam. Square the corners and even the edges. Finish the raw edges with binding.
On a piece of light fabric, embroider a design from the Russian Dolls set. Trim the fabric to get a rectangle of about 5 1/2"" x 6 1/2". Fold the upper raw edge back 1/2" twice, press and stitch with a decorative stitch from your machine. Fold back 1/2" from the remaining raw edges and press. Place the pocket in the left, or right, lower corner of the place mat and stitch it in place using a decorative stitch from your machine.
