You'll need a scrap of fabric for the applique, the fabric or item you want to affix the applique to (it should be large enough to be hooped) and iron-on light- to medium-weight stabilizer.
Tip: The fabric for the applique should not be heavier than the underlying fabric.
Step One: Press the stabilizer onto the fabric you want to use for the applique.
Tip: If you make an applique on a T-shirt, knitted polo or dress, you should stabilize it as well.
Step Two: Hoop the underlying fabric or item without stabilizer. Then place the applique fabric with stabilizer over it. You can secure it on one side with adhesive tape, or pin.
Step Three: Start embroidering the design. First your machine will stitch a baste-stitch to secure the working field. Then the machine will embroider an outline of the motif. After the outline is finished, take the hoop out (do not take the embroidery out of the hoop!) and, working with very sharp scissors, cut away the baste-stitch first, then the excess applique fabric as close to the outline as possible.
Step Four: Insert the hoop into machine and finish the embroidery.
