Quilted Daffodil Table Mats

For these charming table mats, we used the designs from the Stained Glass Applique Daffodil Panel Set for the mega hoop.

The finished size of each mat is about 15" x 22".

To make 4 of the mats, you will need:

  • light-weight cut-away stabilizer,
  • embroidery thread, and cotton or polyester quilting thread (for the last color of the applique),
  • 2 yards of black cotton fabric (we used it as the base fabric for the embroidery, top, binding and backing),
  • scraps of applique fabric for the daffodil panels,
  • about 1/2 yard of cotton fabric matching one of the colors of the applique,
  • batting,
  • quilting threads,
  • quilter's ruler and rotary cutter (if you don't use rotary cutter, you'll need a graphic pencil and sharp scissors)

Emboridery

Embroider the designs from the Stained Glass Applique Daffodil Panel Set. You can read about how to embroider the panels on the page with instructions.

Cut away the excess stabilizer around the embroidery. Do not remove the stabilizer under the embroidery.

Sew the stitch-outs together into one panel.

Using a ruler and a rotary cutter, trim the panel leaving 1 1/2" around the embroidery. The panel will be 10" x 17".

Cutting:

For each mat:
Out of light blue (or yellow) fabric, cut

  • a strip measuring 2 1/2" x 17" and
  • 2 strips measuring 2 1/2" x 15"
Out of black fabric, cut
  • a strip measuring 3" x 17";
  • 2 strips 2 1/2" and the length of the width of the fabric for the binding.
Use the remaining black fabric for the backing.

Assembly of the Top:

Sew the 2 1/2" x 17" blue strip and 3" x 17" black strip together.

Quilted Daffodil Place Mat

Sew this strip to the lower edge of the embroidered panel.

Quilted Daffodil Place Mat

Sew the 2 1/2" x 15" blue strips to the left and right edges of the working piece.

Quilting and Finishing:

Now place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.

Pin all three layers together with 1" pins and start quilting. We quilted in a free motion style all over the table mat.

After the quilting is finished, press the work with heavy steam and square the work -- all corners should be 90 degrees and opposite sides should be of the same length.

Finish the raw edges with the binding.

Your table mat is ready.
