These Christmas themed-towel hangers are a very fun and easy weekend project. They make a great holiday accent. We used the applique designs Santa Claus, Snowman and Santa's Reindeer.
You will need polyester craft felt of assorted colors - white, red, pink, blue, tan, brown. Pre-cut pieces measuring 8" x 11" are available in craft stores and are very good for the project.
You will also need Velcro tape, preferably self-adhesive and 1/2" wide red trim (optional).
All three hangers are made in the same way. White felt was used as a base fabric for the applique.
Step One: Hoop a piece of white felt. Make the applique as per instructions enclosed with the design.
This is a finished applique still in the hoop.
Step Two: Open the hoop and cut out the applique leaving 1/4" of the base fabric on the edges.
Step Three: Place the cut-out on another piece of white felt and trace its outline with a graphic pencil.
Step Four: Cut out the shape along the outline. This will be the back of the hanger.
Step Five: Cut a 10" long piece of 1/2" wide trim. If you do not have trim, then out of felt cut a rectangle measuring 1 1/2" x 10". Fold it lengthwise. Using zig-zag, finish the raw edges of the strip.
Step Six: Attach pieces of Velcro tape at the ends of the strip so that they make a loop.
Step Seven: Position the loop on the face/right side of the back panel, as shown on the picture below. Machine-stitch the loop in places marked by pins.
Step Eight: Cut another 10" long piece of 1/2" wide trim. If you do not have such trim, cut a strip out of felt. Embellish and enhance the raw edges of the felt strip with decorative stitches from your machine.
Fold the strip into a loop and pin to the wrong side of the back, as shown.
Machine-stitch the loop in place.
Now place the back on your table face down. Cover with applique.
Pin the layers together.
Using white threads, topstitch along the outline of the applique. Check that the back loop is closed and is not caught by your stitching.
Open the back loop, make pleats on a towel and place it inside the loop. Fasten the loop. You are done!
