FSL Celtic Designs for Necklace and Earrings

The designs from the FSL Celtic Necklace and Earring Set II are embroidered as free-standing lace. There are three files in the set. The file "CelticSet2A" is to make earrings, the file "CelticSet2B" is to make a necklace on water-soluble mesh and the file "CelticSet2B_P" is to make a necklace using "Puffy Foam" by Sulky (you can find it on Sulky's website). Puffy Foam adds dimension to an embroidery, but you need specially digitized files to achieve the best effect with it.

For the project, you will need water-soluble mesh, embroidery threads, small beads, and jewelry accessories, such as necklace clasps and earwires.

Making Free-Standing Lace

Step 1: Hoop 2-3 layers of water soluble stabilizer.

We recommend light fabric-like stabilizers, also called mesh, such as Vilene, which dissolve in warm water very quickly. Film-like water soluble stabilizers, such as Solvy , are not suitable for this purpose.

Step 2: Embroider the designs. To get two-sided embroidery, either use the same thread in the needle and in the bobbin, or use a bobbin thread of a matching color. The designs can be embroidered in any color you want your jewelry.

We used 40-weight embroidery polyester in the needle and 50-weight cotton thread in the bobbin. Cotton thread gives volume to embroidery.

Step 3: Cut the designs out. Neatly trim the excess stabilizer. Place under warm running water to wash away the remainder.

Press between your hands while the designs are still wet to squeeze water out of them
and lay flat to dry between two towels.

Press with steam.

Step 4: If you are making a necklace, attach a string of beads, or a chain and clasp.

If you are making earrings, attach the earwire to your earring designs. Add seed beads to embellish the earrings, if you wish.

Making the FSL Necklace on Puffy Foam

If you're working with Puffy Foam, use the file with the "P" extension.

Step 1: Hoop the foam between 2 layers of water-soluble mesh.

Step 2: Make the embroidery. Remove the excess Puffy Foam around the embroidery. It pulls away very easily.

Attach the string of beads. Add more beads as embellishments. That's it! The necklace is finished.
