Modern Art Table Runner with Redwork Embroidery

For this quilted table runner, we used the embroidery designs from Redwork Paisley Set for the large hoop (5" x 7").

The finished size is about 15 1/2" x 42".

Besides embroidery thread (either polyester or rayon), you will need
  • light-weight cut-away stabilizer,
  • about 1/4 yard of white cotton fabric,
  • about 1/4 yard of black cotton fabric,
  • scraps of red cotton fabric,
  • backing and batting,
  • quilting threads, white and black to match the fabrics,
  • quilter's ruler and rotary cutter (or graphic pencil and sharp scissors).
Cutting:
Out of white fabric, cut 3 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 42".
Measure and mark a strip 7" wide and 42" long. Do not cut it out yet.

Out of red fabric, cut 6 squares measuring 1 1/2" x 1 1/2".

Out of black fabric, cut
  • 4 strips measuring 1 1/2" and the length of the width of the fabric, and
  • 4 strips measuring 2 1/2" and the length of the width of the fabric. One strip is for the border; trim it to 42" long. The other 3 strips are for the binding; sew them together into one long strip.
Assembly of the Top:
Subcut the first 1 1/2" wide black strip into 4 strips of any length.
Sew them again into one strip inserting 3 red squares between the black parts.
Trim the new strip to 42" long.

Sew them again into one strip inserting a red square between them.

Subcut the third 1 1/2" wide black strip into 3 parts.
Sew them again into one strip inserting 2 red squares between them.
Measure and cut the new strip to 42" long.

Sew the black-and-red and white 1 1/2" x 42" strips together lengthwise, alternating the strips, starting and finishing with the black strips.

Embroidery
Stabilize the white part of the top with light-weight cut-away stabilizer for embroidery. Upload the designs into the machine and embroider them with black thread.
Embroider 6-7 designs of your choice.

After the embroidery is finished, cut away the excess stabilizer and trim the white part along the marked line.

Sew the 2 1/2" x 42" black strip to the bottom of the white part.

Quilting and Finishing:
Now place the backing on a flat surface (table) face down. Cover with batting. Spread your working piece over it.

Pin all three layers together with 1" pins and start quilting. We quilted around the embroidery in a free motion style, with parallel lines along the black stripes and wavy lines along the white stripes.
After the quilting is finished, press the work with heavy steam and square the work -- all corners should be 90 degrees and opposite sides should be of the same length.

Finish the raw edges with the binding.

Your table runner is ready.
Enjoy!
Happy Stitching!
