These are instructions on how to embroider the Applique Christmas Tree Ornament.
You can embroider the design as regular applique or as a freestanding ornament.
For the regular applique you will need base fabric, fabric for the applique, light-weight stabilizer, and embroidery polyester or rayon threads.
For the ornament, you will need water-soluble mesh, fabric for the applique, light-weight iron-on stabilizer, and a piece of yarn for a loop. A fabric glue stick is also helpful.
Stabilize the applique fabric with light-weight iron-on stabilizer.
Step One: Hoop 2 layers of watersoluble mesh stabilizer, such as Fabri-Solvy by Sulky, Avalon Plus by Madeira, Wash-Away, Aqua Magic, etc.
Upload the design file into your machine. Start embroidering. The machine will embroider the outline of the tree and stop.
Step Two: Take the hoop from the machine and cover the outline with the applique fabric on both sides! Pin the fabric to the stabilizer outside the embroidery area.
The second color will embroider the same outline of the tree over the applique fabric and stop.
Step Three: Take the hoop from the machine. With a pair of sharp scissors cut away the fabric around and inside the outline as shown on the picture below. Cut the fabric on both sides.
Step Four: The next color will finish the raw edges of the tree. Choose a color that works for your project. The same thread should be used in the bobbin!
Step Five: The next color will embroider the position of the stars. After the machine stops, take a piece of yarn, fold it in half to make a loop, position the ends inside the top star. Place a very small amount of fabric glue inside the star to attach the ends of the yarn. Pull the loop out of the way so it's not caught in the embroidery and use a pin or two to secure it.
Step Six: Cover the outline of the stars with the applique fabric on both sides. Pin the fabric outside the embroidery area.
Step Seven: Start the machine. It will embroider the outline of the stars on the applique fabric.
Step Eight: Take the hoop from the machine. With a pair of sharp scissors cut away the fabric around the star outlines as close to the stitches as possible on both sides.
Step Nine: Return the hoop to the machine. Now the raw edges of the stars will be finished, so use a thread that matches your project. The same thread should be used in the bobbin!
Step Ten: Cut away the excess stabilizer, rinse away the remainder. Spread the ornament on a paper towel and leave to air dry. Press.
The ornament is ready.
The design can be embroidered as a regular applique. Hoop the base fabric stabilized with the iron-on stabilizer (the weight of the stabilizer depends on your project). Follow steps 1 through 9, but place the applique fabric on the top of the hoop only. You do not need to change the bobbin threads because this applique is one-sided.
